Is there a website that has all the information on what it takes to become a charter captain? I am thinking of adding this to the list of things that I dont have time to do. Damn Work. But without work I would have the boat with the blown motor. Three week to get fixed.

Thanks
Roy

Hey Roy send Greg or salmon head a pm
They took the class and got their license couple years back
The blown motor is a easy one to fix finding the time to go fishing may be a lot harder
I got the boats with no time to use them
I considered getting a captains license many years ago but decided against it because i did not want to turn my fishing into another JOB
Many guys do it to be able to afford a little bigger boat probably not the best choice of a vocation to make a ton of money
But I been thinking lately being a boat dealer may have been a good choice t be able to afford a larger boat but its been keeping me from doing some fishing
might have been better off getting that captains license ?

Roy,
the big thing is getting the USCG merchant marine licencse. That is what takes all the time. After you have that, get the boat inspected and you are ready to go. The state will send you a packet on what needs to be done on the boat. Call on of the captain license places that offer a class to get their info. basically you need to pass the exams, and then get a physical, eye exam, hearing test, cpr/ first aid, drug test and send in some money and so forth. Add to that the newest requirements of a TWIC card, and they are now enforcing the documentation of your boat so that needs to be done as well. All in all, you will have a fair amount of time and about 1500-2000 wrapped up into it by the time you add the extra safety equipment and stuff like that.
Greg and I took the class from Great Lakes Charter Training and it made the exam a breese. I would recommend them highly. After you fulful the requirements for the coasties, you can have the boat inspected at the state level and off you go. That will be a dockside and a drydock inspection.

Roy, I've been thinking about getting my license too, so I've been doing some research.

Unfortunately, Great Lakes Charter Training is apparently out of business. Don't know what happened, but he doesn't answer any of his phone numbers and his website is gone.

There are some other popular training companies that teach you the material you need to pass the test and administer the test. Try Captain Bryan's out of Traverse City:

I also have been looking at this place out of Wisconsin where you can take the class online and then travel to a location near you to take the exams.

Explorer's Guide Online Captain's Classes

Hope that helps...
Tom

I took the class threw explores guide and was very happy. I took the classroom one not the online one but it made the exams very easy. Also they are more than willing to help you with any application questions you have.

Thanks guys I am just looking to make things legal. When I have taken people on the weekends they offer money for gas and extras. But I was asked if I charter. And I said no but would take a guy and his son fishing for no cost. Well the guy offered to pay me and I refused and then when I got back on the boat there was a envelope with $400 and a note for taking his son and him fishing. I like the idea of the online class since I dont have a lot of time as it is.

Frank I lost your number I need to set up some time to come look at your cat.

Roy
