HI everyone,
New to the board but has been informative. I have been fishing Georgian Bay steadily for six years now. Last season I bought a 24' Citation ( hard top, cuddy, 2 Walker electrics,). My question is, now that I have a boaat that can easily suit a charter of 4 people what are some of the ways you used to get the word out about your services. Also what type of special insurance or permits do you need to make everything legal.
Thanks in advance,
Tight lines,
gonefission

I'm not aware of wha tthe canadian charter licensing regulations are.

As far as promotion I would try a local charter association in or near your home port on Georgian bay, should generate some leads for you.

I sent an e-mail to a chartering friend of mine from the Georgian Bay area. He may not have any ideas for promoting his competition but he will know the logistics and legalities of becoming a bonafide charter captain. I'll post the information as I get it. Best of luck in your new endeavor! There's certainly something exciting about being able to fish for a living.

Here's the reply I got about becoming a charter captain in Canada:

Things are easier here than in the US. If done on the up and up....you need to set up a business number with the Ontario Gov't, a GST number with Revenue Canada, you must have charter insurance (min $2 million liability I believe), boat must be inspected by the Canadian Coast Guard ( they have a special list of add ons) and then check with the municipality you wish to fish out of. With these things done, you will get to write off all GST and expenses as well as have no one checking up on you. No charter licensing, no captain's licensing etc. etc..

Thanks for all the help. It definitley is an exciting feeling when you can think of fishing for a living. I am going to do some more research into it. Sounds like you guys in the States have a lot more to go through but it is still a small expense for doing what you love!!!
Thanks again,
