Fished the Benzie Frenzy this weekend. First time I have ever fished Frankfort tourny or otherwise. All I can say is it is a very nice tourny in a nice town run by good people.

We pre-fished on Thur evening and Friday morning. The weather was good and we took 7 kings and a coho Thur evening then took 13 fish, 9 kings and 4 coho on Sat morning.

Hot action was glow J-plugs early and late, Green Scaley and Mongoose J-plugs during the day. Flasher worked real well with the White Blade/Mtn Dew/Glo Revelator pulling a Sigs Rig Gold Mirage fly being very hot and a White Blade/Dark Green/Glo Revelator pulling a Purple Taco Green Ghost Fly also taking multiple hits. A 11" White/Double Glow Bechholds pulling a green twinkie rig and meat one a green Shock Wave bait head took multiple fish in mid day as well as the Mtn Dew Revelator.

Then as always seems to happen, the big winds and rain came in Friday night and we fished in 4-6' waves that built to 7-8' waves on Sat. We managed our 6 kings but only got one oddball (tourny required 10 fish, two man MI limit for weighing) a decent coho. One again Green glow J-plug hot early on the kings, but the first fish of the day was the Coho that hit a White blade/Double Glo Revelator pulling a orange/silver fly from KRW flies. I got the fly free in a tourny "goodie bag" early in the year and decided it might take a coho, which it did. But only got the one despite swithing to a more coho focused program after we got 6 kings, all the while searching for a big king.

The tourny was called early due to the 8'+ waves that had built so everyone had to be in by 1:10pm instead of 2:30pm

Sunday saw 3-5' waves and we just plain sucked as the fish had scattered from where we had been taking them. Once we found them we boated 3 good kings and a steelie with the hot rig being the same Bechholds/Shock Wave meat rig pulling a king, having one break off the hook behind the head (40# test I had tied so I am assuming it got nicked in process of off catching/netting the other kings it took and I failed to notice it). We also missed two on that rig and broke off a big king that straightened out a snap I had been using. (New brand/stength of snaps in place after yesterday!!!) Just par for our day, I haven't broken off a fish in like 3 years and we had two yesterday when we really needed the fish! Lessons re-visited!!

The Steelie and a king took a Green Scaley J-Plug and the best king took a White Blade/Blue Bubble/Glo 8" Becholds on the divers.

No real hot spots or depths to report as we basically had to move with the fish for all four days catching fish in 350 FOW and the steelie in 18 FOW on things from flatlined J-Plugs to the meat rig 91' down on the rigger.

As always some boats found the fish and did real well and my hats are off to them! Congratulations to the winners both Pro and Am, but the whole Benzie Frenzy tourny crew and all the participants were great!

Another side note is my wife Toni who crewed in the tourny and showed what she is made of being riding out the 6-8' waves Sat and 4-5' waves on Sun and the bone jarring runs back to port to beat the deadlines, crewing in her first major tourny. She showed me she can handle anything that we will have to face because if it is worse than that they will call the tourny or I will...

I will be back next year and now am armed with some local knowledge.

Sounds like a tough go out there Skip - but it also sounds like you had a good time and found out that your wife is an old salt. We had talked about going up there for the tourney but couldn't get everyone's time lined up to make it happen. But glad to hear it is well run.

Hey Skip do you know what the payouts were for Pro and Am?

Payouts were not real big. I think Pro !st was $3500 and Am 1st $2000?

I would have t look at my paperwork to find them.

But in anycase, Frankfort is a very cool little town and has some great fishing for sure.

As the Cubs fans say...."Next year..."

King fishing was hot, but I have to get a solid coho/steelie program in place for next year!
