Stupid reel questions

If you allow your line to slip through the line guide and onto the spool and crank it a few times how do you realign the line coming off the spool with the guide so the line is coming off the spool in the same direction as the guide is traveling?

When re-spooling a reel how do you keep the line from accumulating at one end kind of forming a sideways pyramid?

These seem like such simple problems to solve but I haven't be able to come up with a solution yet just frustration.

CEME,
Usually you can leave the line outside the line guide and pull line off the spool till the two line up again. If that doesn't work loosen the screw at the top of the line guide carriage (over the Pawl) the line guide should slide back and forth over the pawl so you can re-align it with the line coming off the spool then re-tighten the screw and catch some fish! Be careful of small parts that may fall out if you loosen the screw too much. Don't worry if that happens cause it is simple to re-assemble.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the "pyramid" problem but I suspect it may be caused by the line not being wound tightly on the spool when you first start spooling (this happens a lot with the new super lines). If that happens then sometimes the line will spin freely over the reel spool and cause all sorts of weird problems. If you have a knob on the reel spool use it to attach your line to the spool to keep this from happening. if you don't have a knob (most reels these days don't) then you can use a piece of duct tape or something similar to attach the line snugly to the reel spool when first filling it up.
Hope this helps.
Mike Coe.

Thanks Mike

Good idea for re-aligning the line on the spool to the guide.

As far as a "pyramid" What I mean is if you were to look at the reel from the top there would be more line on one side of the spool than the other. Putting the line tightly on the spool is not a problem it just seems that on some of my reels they spool unevenly.

CEME,
Thats kind of what I thought you meant by the pyramid. Again the only time I have seen that happen is a result of the lins spinning on the reel spool. Assuming that you are using a level wind reel I am at a loss as to the cause of your problem. Maybe some of the other guys can shed some light on this.

I'va Had the same problem occaisionally, where the line tends to "pile up" on one side of the spool slightly. Two things you can try: Bend the top of the line guide slightly, away from the side where it piles up most, or, as you are spooling line on the reel, use your fingers to pull the line toward the "low" side of the spool. I've had this problem with Penn reels more than I have with Shimano or Diawa. I think it's just a matter of a poorly engineered level wind.
