I have a 1988 90hp Johnson that sounds the alarm when put in gear. It does not alarm when out of gear idling.
The instruction book says two things can cause an alarm low oil or over temp. I checked the oil tank it is OK.
The motor was checked by a marina repairman who said both banks read 192 degree's. They put in a new impeller and it was suppose to be fixed. It still alarms when put in gear. Does anyone have any idea's of what could be causing the problem?

There are 5 alarms modes on that motor

#1 short beep when you first turn the ign sw on called the self test alarm

#2 one second on one second off is the no oil delivery alarm (you don’t ever want to hear this one)
If so immediately pour oil in to the fuel tank

#3 solid alarm is the overheat alarm

#4 solid alarm at high speeds only is the fuel restriction alarm

#5 one beep every 15 seconds or so is the low oil in tank alarm the low oil in tank alarm will sound intermittently until the oil is real low then it will sound every 15 seconds until you refill the tank

then of course there is allways the malfunctioning mode that can be caused by bad sensors pinched wires ect ect ect

If it was my motor I would install the vro elimination kit and put the oil in the gas myself

vro failures can be accounted for 90% of all the power head failures i have worked on the last 20 years

if your mechanic did not know all the above he does not seem to be familiar with this set up I dont think i would trust him working on this system

eliminates the vro its a new fuel pump kit with every thing needed to install it .

you then put the oil in the gas tank

example
put quart of oil in tank then add 12 gallons of gas

this also will allow you to unplug fuel and run carbs dry when done with the motor for the day . This keeps the carbs from varnishing up during periods of non use

I guess the part I don't understand is if you put the oil in the gas tank. Why do you need the new oil pump?
I guess one quart of oil to 12 gallions of gas would give the proper ratio. Is that correct?
Thank you very much for taking time to answer my questions.
Also I should have told you the alarm is constant when the boat is in gear. A repairman said 192 degrees on both banks was too high. I have added oil to the oil tank. I flat don't know, it seems like the alarm would sound even out of gear, it still needs oil. The temp. might increase while in gear running in the water.
I have run the motor on a flush device for 30 minutes at idle it never alarms out of gear. Thanks again.

its old school we are removing the oil injection by replacing the pump. going back to the way they made the fuel system prior to vro

yes 192 is too high . i would guess there is a gasket or oring out of place some where, posibly a thermostat issue . even at this the alarm should take quite a while to come on and things to heat up to 192 hard to say with out looking at the machine
posibly exhaust entering the cooling system this might explain why it shows up when you put the machine into gear

although replacing the vro with the old system would not have any effect on a cooling system issue . you have to understand how it all works to fix a alarm problems

hope this helps keep us posted

Thanks Hondacat, I think I will wait until Spring and then put it in the shop at another Marina.
