85 four wins, free rev

My buddy just bought a 1985 four wins sundowner
225, it seems as though when up on plane the engine
will intermittantly free rev and the boat slows
down. It didn't do it Sunday but did it last night.
it has a mercruiser 230 hp 5.0, I'm not sure the exact out drive. Any suggestions on what to look for?

put new prop on and re test sounds like a prop going bad
