Be sure to read to the end and send any comments to the DNR. It would be nice if the Michigan bag limit was set back to six walleye like it used to be. Same as Ohio and Ontario. Maybe another note to increase that also.

I think this would be a great idea and it would help save some gas out there as well. We need to get Ohio on board with this too!

You would think whatever logic the DNR used when they changed the salmon/trout trolling rules from 2 rods per person to 3 rods per person would hold for trolling any great lake for any species. What's the difference if you take 5 walleye with 3 rods or 2? Other than you can do it faster (and save fuel).

I sent an email last month regarding this issue, and will do so again.

FWIW..you will NEVER get OH to change to a 3-rods per person limit. OH seems to have their feet stuck in the sand when it comes to fishing regulations...unless it has to do with REDUCING daily limits (i.e. perch). I also find it hilarious that OH will allow the PWT/FLW to fish tournies out of their ports in April and allow the anglers to take 5 fish per person...when the limit is 4. Explain that one...

We've been asking (at least I have) the DNR to consider putting a minimum length limit on perch as well. Guess what...they just cut the limit down again...

GRRR...

I also doubt that much movement will be made in regards to the 5 fish MI limit on Erie. Hell, it wasn't long ago that we couldn't even FISH MI waters of Erie during April and May. Remember that???

One underlying theme that I noticed within the MI information that was linked is that the DNR does not feel that most anglers "catch their limit" in a day.

Hmmm...

I think thats the old "10% of anglers catch 90% of the fish" saying. There's probably a lot of truth to it though. The DNR does surveys, not often but they do, and I'm sure they have statistics that show most anglers do not catch their limits. Check out around the cleaning stations and boat ramps. Yeah there are days that almost everyone has a limit, but they are pretty rare. More often you'll have the same bunch of guys with limits (or close) and a bunch of anglers that only did "pretty good", "o-kay", "struggled", or "skunked".

Also, not everyone has the resources we do. Communication is probably the most important thing. I work with a dozen guys who are constantly fishing side by side and sharing info. Where the fish are biting, when, and on what, is more important than a million seminars. That's why this and similar websites are so important. I talk to so many anglers at Sterling St park who are clueless. They don't have the experience but most important they don't have the resources i.e. the buddies helping them find fish and what is working at the time. The ones who do, usually do the best. Go Pistons.

I think you're so right on. It's a big lake out there and having a network of friends that help each other out with what they've learned is invaluable to productive time fishing opposed to unproductive time searching. Go Redwings!

Absolutely Jim. I've been fishing the great lakes for over 30 years myself and trial and error sucks! I work at Chrysler and we network for walleye, perch, salmon, bass e.t.c. We fish everywhere from Leland to Ludington to Rockport to Monroe. Sometimes we have several boats fishing side by side. We have several retirees who fish in the morning and we go out in the afternoon after work and they tell us where it's dirty, where they found fish and what they got them on! It's defintely the best! Networking is the ticket. Oh yeah, Go Wings!
