I just discovered this site and am having a blast reading all the posts. I am considering buying a Canon Speed-N-Temp Monitor for next year. I fish Keweenaw Bay in Lake Superior and we have some wild currents. I use a GPS for speed control now but that doesn't help me with the currents running up and down the bay. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this device and could provide me with some feedback before I get one. Thanks for all the info you guys post.

Welcome yooper glad to have you aboard. I'm sure Saint will be able to answer any questions that you have reagrding the Cannon SNT unit. Saint is one of the largest Cannon distributors in the country and you can check the units out at http://www.captgarys.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/111_49 which is his retail site.

Welcome Yopper,
A friend has one on his boat, and its very impressive.
It also tells you light conditions down deep.

Sorry Yooper for the delay. The Cannon Speed and Temp is a very impressive unit! The key to this unit working is to have a proper ground directly to the battery. It is also necessary to use the coated cable. I do not care what any manufacturer says, use the cable!!! The only real disadvantage to the SNT is the price of the replacement probe($399). Its beifits over the other units; it tells you actual depth, and light penitration.

In all, they have worked out the bugs Cannon($499) had in the begining. If you need the added features and do not mind a coated cable unit, buy the SNT. If you do not need the other features and want a coated cable unit, buy the Depth Raider($429)(probe cost $189). If you do not want the coated cable, your only choice is the Fish Hawk($629)(probe cost $225).

I hope that I answered your questions. If you need more info please feel free to call me at 1-800-325-7181.

Saint,

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful. I don't really need the light sensor so I'll probably go with the Depth Raider.

I just bought the unit, and finally figured out everything how it works, the directions could use a few more illustrations.

Anyway, how far above the ball does everyone generally run the lower unit? I ask this because, I already lost a ball a month ago, and don't want to fowl up again, any tips appreciated.

Directions are horrible, this unit will not work on regular cable(directions says it will), only coated cable which is included, but it wasn't fun changing it in 4' seas in the Straits of Mackinac. Cannon must sub this unit out, its weird nothing is on their website about it. Other than that works great once I put on the coated cable.

Hey Vince,

do you have the larger replacement antennas for the Depth Raider that are made for Scotty downriggers to let the auto stop beads pass through? I need a new one.

Thanks in advance,

Tim Bromund
