Thanks for the article Rick. I have been watching this carp issue for quite a while now and I am pretty well convinced that once these fish get into the great lakes it will only be a matter of time before our sportfishing days will be over and it's not likely they will ever be back. Pretty scary....
Mike.

As much as it tore my heart out to read these articles, I'm glad they were printed and got the front page coverage needed to get the public involved. The printed word can be a powerful thing. Kudos to the Urinal-Sentinel!

it's really troubling. I grew up living on Lake St. Clair and watched the fishing go from great to horrible and back to great. Hopefully this acts as a wakeup call and while things may get worse; but because of dedicated fishermen I believe we will manage our way through this threat.

One of my first jobs was at Great Lakes Evironmental Research Lab - the crisis we had back then was phosphate from soaps. etc... it screwed things up pretty badly but eventually with pressure and involvement from sportsmen and others we overcame it. That's what is going to have to happen here too.

The good thing about the phosphates was that they could be cleaned up and for the most part eliminated from the system. The bad thing about the carp, and other imports, is that it is unlikely, once they are in the great lakes, that they can be eliminated without killing the whole lake. It seems to me that if it is money is the issue that is holding up the barrier and it's maintainence that the sportsmen around the lakes would be willing to contribute. Might be an additional fee attached to fishing licences (from all concerned states and canada) that would go directly to that project. I really believe that sportsfishermen would not complain about supporting such a project as long as the money gets to where it is supposed to go and is not abused by politicians. Another thought might be for the various sportfishing affiliated organizations such as MSSFA, Great lakes charter boat association, tournament comittees, etc. tack on something to their menbership fees that would be disignated to support such a project.
The other issue is the possibility of someone dumping them into the lakes. About the only thing we could do about that (aside from a lynching) would be to support legislation making it against the law to bring live carp into the surrounding states.
Mike.
