We attended the Walleye Smackdown held out of Toledo Beach Marina and fished aboard the Salmonhead on Saturday morning.

We left dock at about 6:15 with Salmonhead, FLATRATE, Verdict aka Brad, and Ryan aka .... You! We headed out with very little concrete information - we were told - head towards toledo light and a bit North and find the clear water. On the ride out we realized that none of us knew how to fish for Walleye so our expectations were low.

Well we drove to Toledo light - the water looked the same - we went north and eat from there - the water looked the same. We saw some boats ahead so we decided that must be the "clear" water - it looked the same - Salmonhead picked a boat on the run that looked like it knew what is was doing - I guess it was properly trimmed or something. Finally we shutdown somewhere west of West Sister Island - we could see the flotilla in and around the island - we were a good 4 or 5 miles East of that - we sat down in 27 FOW I guess.

We were there - we had a bag of walleye baits in all the popular colors - I guess - so we began deploying lines. Not your typical Walleye equipemnt - 50# braid divers - 30 # mono board rods with little mini discs - 2 and 3 color cores and 20# rigger rods. So much for the stealthy light tackle appraoch.

We deployed our 10 rod spread - 6 inline planer boards - 2 divers - and 2 riggers. For me it was like a throw back to starting Salmon fishing - we had no expectations - everything was an experiment - and we started fishing. Don't get me wrong - we did have a boat full of professional anglers - that shoudl help - NOT!!!! We were having so much fun you couldn't tell us apart from a bus full of six graders going off to camp.

About 5 minutes into trolling we figured we were in a good spot as we came parallel to Richard on Finweaver II and decided we msut be lucky.

Indeed we were lucky - we preceeded to stay out of the West Sister floating city and managed to get our 5-man Ohio limit of Walleye - equaled or exceeeded by White Bass and a couple of kicker Sheepies just to keep things interesting.

Hot Baits were - who knows - we had a little bit of everything out - Northports in small size and regualr salmon size and Yeck's in walleye and regualr size all went. Everything seemed to work for us.
