The age-old adage says that walleyes are finicky, picky, and very shy...and would rather feed in the low-light hours given their ocular orientation for doing so...

Well, I disagree.

This past weekend at the Walleye Smackdown, we caught fish on everything we put in the water. Downriggers, dipsey divers, leadcore, mini-discs, deeper divers, etc. I was very surprised at the number of nice walleyes that came to the net off the riggers and divers. We were fishing in 28fow, running the rigger down 21 w/ a 36' lead off the ball. The dipsies were set on 3 w/ no ring, and Keith was using two very shiny gold ones...and we were setting them back 49-54' on the counter.

Finicky? I think not...those fish had the feed bag on...and when cleaning them, we found them to be full of emerald shiners and mayflies. We were catching them in blue-sky conditions w/ bright sun...in the middle of the day.

This experience is consistent with several articles that I have read in major publications over the last couple years. What used to be considered a "shy and docile" fish should now be considered an aggressive predator.

Stealth tactics might work...but wow..it sure is easier to pull the hardware at higher speeds...

Clark, I think that the lake Erie walleye is a very different animal than most walleyes in other places.
There is SO much competition there that they have become active at all times. Walleyes in other places I have fished are very structure oriented and won't generally travel far to get your bait so you often have to be very precise in your presentation.
I do agree that they are very agressive predators and are to be feared if your are a bait fish
