Numbers or Size???

All,

Which would you rather experience with our salmon and trout fishery? Numbers or Size?? I'm asking about kings here...but other species would apply as well. Seems the numbers of large lakers are no longer present on the West side of the lake..in comparison to the late 90's and early 2000's where it was common to see 6 lakers of 15# or more brought to the scales at SU events.

Personally, I would rather experience numbers, as I like to see limits come to the net. I have not been salmon fishing long enough to have experienced the "good ole days" where 30# kings came to the net on Lake Michigan, so my perception may be somewhat skewed on this matter.

I did see several kings over 30# at Rogers City in the late 1990's..including two impressive fish at the cleaning station...one which weighed 37# and the other 33#..caught by the same crew as a double (according to them).

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Spoken like a true walleye fisherman

I'd prefer size. I'd be perfectly happy catching only 5 or 6 kings per trip if they were all 20+.

I don't want to cop out on this one - but I want the numbers to be wherever is most healthy for our King population.

We were just discussing this topic not exactly about numbers versus size - but about anglers measuring their worth by bringing limits to the net.

I think that limit fishing should be celebrated but not the measurement.

I'll give you a recent and perfect example - we were at the cleaning station on saturday night cleaning a great catch - 14 fish - all pretty darned good sized. There was another fella and his crew cleaning their couple fish and you could see the dejection on his face when he saw our catch.

Now this guy doesn't know that many of us were pro anglers - have access to great information - have many years of experience in the port - know where to go when the fishing is tough.

I just hope it didn't ruin his day! The bottom line is go out and have a great time fishing - take some kids with you and remember what is was like just to hook up on a fish or two - don't worry about numbers or size!!!!

Good points above. Personally, put me in the "size matters" crowd. I think the best fish tales are always about big fish. Sure fast limits are cool. But when you're at the cleaning station what draws the most ooooh's and ahhhh's? The monster fish!

That said, with inexperienced folks aboard, numbers are important. I like to see everyone get at least a few cracks at catching some, even if the fish aren't in lunker category. Also would rather catch a few smaller fish than a skunk.

I'm spoiled, I used to be happy to go and if I caught 1 5pound salmon for the table and had a great time on the lake it was a great trip..after getting a little better and a little lucky with limits every trip. The norm became how fast you limited.. Now it might be back to a reality check of a few nice fish for the table.

I have been fortunate to fall into a group of guys that have helped me get where I can catch fish regularly.I know what Greg is saying about the folks who see the big catches others have caught and feel bad when they were happy before seeing some one elses catch. The group of guys that I am proud to call my freinds openly exchange Timely,Truthful ,Accurate reports on the radio. No codes or hidden meanings. These other folks most likely sit there listening thinking these guys are full of Shi..With this kind of info it really makes it happen better.Put me down for the big numbers in this poll

Put me in the "size" category. Personally, I'd rather catch one memorable fish than a mess of cookie-cutter 4-6 lb'ers. Like Mike said, everyone always loves to look at and talk about the big fish. Of course, no one likes to get to the dock with just a couple of fish when everyone else is pulling them in by the boatload...so I guess numbers are somewhat important too...but I'd still vote for quality over quantity.

Right now, a number of extremely large steelhead are being caught up and down the Michigan coast. I think hooking into one of those babies could make your whole season!
