I refused to accept that 10/15 marks the end of the fishing season for me each year so I headed up to Ludington in an attempt to fish one more weekend despite the strong north blow we had most of last week. With the residual still remaining from the north wind, we decided to have breakfast instead of fish on Saturday morning since the weather forcast called for calmer seas on Saturday evening.

The decision to wait for the evening paid off. We were welcomed by 1' seas as we headed out of the pierheads around 5 p.m. We headed a bit north but found progressively colder water the further we went north which made the decision to head deeper easy. As we turned on a 270 degree course, the surface temperature steadily increased from 46 up to 51 degrees where we set up. By that point, we had less than 2 hours of daylight and not a huge amount of confidence in our chances, but that changed quickly.

As we started to set our 12 rod spread, the third rod in the water, a high diver quickly took off and brought a juvenile king to the net. The action continued for the next 90 minutes as we saw doubles, triples and even a quaduple - a 13 for 16 performance comprising 12 kings and 1 coho, in the warmer water that got as warm as 57.

Our hot baits included:
- Yeck Mixed Veggie;
- Stinger Sunburst;
- DW Lemon Icicle;
- Yeck Double Red Laser;
- Yeck Superglow Ladderback; and
- Fuzzy Bear Hot Pants (in the small flutter spoon).

We could only make a quick trip on Sunday morning so we could unload all the gear on the boat to ready it for its long winter rest. Since there was no wind overnight, we knew the warm water would be in the same place we found it the night before. We set up about 0.25 miles from our best waypoints from the night before (N 00.5, W 34.5) and had fish on immediately. We took a brief 0.5 mile first pass which saw us take 3 fish, quickly turned and boated 7 more on our second, and finished our box with 2 more on a third on the same baits listed above along with a DW SS Hot Carmel. We ended up with 12 fish, 9 kings and 3 coho in about 75 min for a fast 3 man limit and a great way to end the season.

Get out there if you can, the late season fishery still offers fast action and zero crowds. When you get out, post a report so the rest of us can live vicariously.
