Do you have to use a special rod when using Dipsey's or can you use a regular downrigger rod? I have never tried them yet.

You can use regular rigger rods of medium or med heavy action just fine. For mono a stiffer rod is better to me as it helps trip the dipsy when you need to reset. For super line outfits even a medium will work.

I do prefer a longer rod for dipsys though to keep them outside of my side riggers. 9' is as short as I go.

personally I use a rod designed for divers. I have 9, 9.5 and 10.5' rods for each side of the boat. I prefer the Talora by Shimano, however have used Browning Siliflex, Okuma Pro, and Diawa Heartland rods. they all work. Pick what fits your budget and go have some fun.

I ran dipseys off just regular old downrigger rods for several years. They work just fine. I will say that it seems rods that are built for dipseys do have some advantages...

I use 10' Okuma Blue Diamond Dipsey rods and the way the rod is designed to bend is differnt than a rigger rod and helps to get the diver, rod and everything cleared out the side of the boat.

These in particular are just stiffer than normal it seems till about 2/3 up and then get a lot more flex.

I had real good luck with the Diawa Heartlands for the money they are a real good rod I would say.
