Can anyone offer some advice on using herring for bait? Specifically how to cure, package for storage, cut to use in holders, or anything else a newbie might want to know concerning the use of herring. I ordered some online and need to know what has to be done when I get them. Thanks

Do a search for cut bait in the forum search - also herring try that - lots of good discussions regarding the use and preparation of herring.

Hey Nut!

A few things on using herring. I'm assuming you're using cut strips?

We take the strips we're using for the day out of the package and pat them dry with some paper towel. Then we put them in a small flat tupperware type container and liberally coat them with pickling salt, roll them around in it to ensure good coverage and then leave them in it for about 15-20 minutes or so. What this does is firm them up so they don't fall apart during use and also seems to shine the scales up a bit and holds them on better. Then we rinse the salt off and coat them with herring oil to add to their appeal.

Keep a pair of scissors on board to trim the strips to fit the bait heads. You shouldn't cram them into the heads as it will cause them to break down quickly in the water.

Use round toothpicks to secure the strips into the heads. Square toothpicks don't work very well.

If I think of more helpful bits I'll add them later.

Good luck!
