Experience Outdoors was fishing St Joseph for the Okuma Summer Challenge where we finished a respectable tie for 13th.

Fishing was variable but mostly good.

Prefishing we stayed on the clay just south of port in the 90 to 130 FOW range trolling South to SouthWest mainly although we took fish in just about every direction. Fishing here was primarily Lake Trout as the silver fish had moved.

We were skipping bottom with flashers and spin-n-glows on the riggers. Green and/or Yellow base colored spin-n-glows seemed to be the ticket with chrome green with red head working well for us.

Core and Copper deep near the bottom with 300' and 450' copper with Fuzzy Bear regular and mag modified blue and modified green dolphin doing most of the heavy lifting.

Day one of the tournament left us short on fish and needing to make a change and change we did.

We ran to the offshore waters pushing well past 300 FOW which amounts to a 20 mile or more run offshore. The fishing was fun but foreign to most of the spring fishing we had done. Be prepared to work the entire water column as we took fish from 3 color to 250+ feet down on the riggers. We boated a full tournament limit of 15 fish with 12 to weigh and had a good mix with 7 Kings, 6 Lakers, and 2 Steelhead.

What we didn't change was the baits we used we stuck to the same colors and lures that had been taking fish and the didn't let us down. Our steelhead came on DW Super Slim GoldieLocks and HitMan Silver. Modified Blue Dolphin Regular Fuzzy Bear, Mag Fuzzy Frosted Veggie and Cocktail Glow did the kings in and a couple lakers. Dreamweaver Paddles with Spin-N-Glows and Smoke dodgers with spin-n-glows worked well for the balance of lakers bringing a 14+ and 12+ lbs to the transom.

Thanks to Charlie and Teresa from the Fishin Hole in St Joe for all their hard work, and thanks to the SW Michigan Steelheaders for a great event - we had a blast.
