BFG and I got the wives to join us this afternoon. We set lines about 14:45 and got off to a slow start. Several swing & misses early on and by the end of our first hour we had 2 in the box.

Called cantgetenough and he seemed to be on them pretty good so we swung LD onto a heading that would put us in his general area. Good call, thanks Steve! By 19:30 we were pulling lines. Twenty tastie walleye and one perch. Our 'eyes ranged from 16" to 21" today. We threw back a 13" and an 8". Probably caught 50 silvers. No sheep.

Our best setup was an 80' lead behind the tow lines. Lady Bug did the heavy lifting today. Lady Bug was also on 3 of our 8 rods too, so that might explain part of it too. Green Slick, Watermelon anti-freeze and Mi-Hi also scored a few times each. Thats pretty much all we ran.

It was a real pleasure to spend some time with Kristin, Clark & Maria today. Hope we can do it again soon.

We had a great time Mike, and it was a pleasure (once again) to share Lake Erie with you and Maria.

Kristin had a blast....but I think she got a bit tired towards the end...

However..

I might add that her mouth was running pretty good at the cleaning station....

Oh..and yep..she caught bigger fish than me...AGAIN..

Sorry for that...

22-23fow straight out in front of Brest Bay was best for us yesterday. Water was a bit dirtier in there, but the fish were snappin'..

80' back off the towline, speed 1.9-2.2 knots.

Hope that helps...and welcome to the site walleyewanderer!

Sorry for the lack of detail. It was late when we got in Sunday night and I had a morning trip to get ready for.

We started fishing out deeper and our first 3 came from 26-27 FOW, next 3 came in 24-25 FOW. We finished 21 FOW. The majority came in 22-23.

Welcome walleyewanderer.

IT APPEARS YOU HAVE SOME COMPETITION FOR THE TITLE OF
"THE" SUPERSIZED FISHING TEAM. MY BUDDY AND I DISPLACE ABOUT 700 GALLONS(600LBS.) HOWEVER WE ARE RELATIVELY NEW TO FISHING ERIE AND ARE HAVING HIT OR MISS SUCCESS.
WE HAVE BEEN TROLLING SPOONS ON DIVERS OFF THE BOARDS EAST OF LUNA PIER IN 20-23 FT. KILLED THEM SUNDAY NIGHT AND COULDN'T CATCH AN EYE TO SAVE OUR LIVES MONDAY EVE.
SOUNDS LIKE WE MIGHT NEED TO RUN UP TO STONY POINT. HEARD OF ANYONE DOING ANY GOOD IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS MONDAY? WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY TIPS OR TRICKS YOU CAN PROVIDE TO HELP US SPEED UP THE LEARNING CURVE.

Welcome aboard douggun.

You didn't say what kind of boat you have, how she's equipped or whether you're trailering around. But here's a few tips that might help you (or others).

Learning Curve (my opinion only): A decent fishfinder, gps, vhf, and a cell phone are pretty much required. A network of fellow anglers that will help you out is a Godsend. Autopilots are cool.

Fishfinder - There's no sense fishing where no fish are around. Turn off the fish symbols, crank the gain 'till you see a bunch of grains on the screen then back it off a tad and learn to read the display raw. The symbols are some computer programmers algorithm that may or may not correctly show you whats there. The raw signal allows your brain to make the determinations.

GPS - Mark a waypoint for every walleye you catch each day. When you loose them (and you will), go back to those spots where the waypoints are concentrated. Lance Valentine (walleye101.com) has some excellent info on using both GPS & Fishfinders for fishing. He does free seminars at fishing shows during the winter and also as local Gander Mountain and other sports stores. If you get a chance, you can't beat the price. Its definatly worth the time.

VHF radio can sometimes help with depths, leads and general areas if you monitor the channels the locals are using (68 is common in our area). It can also be annoying as hell. It is mandatory in my book for if the SHTF. If your's has dual watch feature, monitor 16 as well. You never know when you might be the guy who can save someones azz (or life). BFG & I were on Erie the other night and spend a good 90 minutes trying to assist in a MOB situation that the coast guard was broadcasting about. Unfortunatly, the last I heard, they still have not found him.

Cell Phone - for calling the wife and telling her you'll be late. Really though, see the next item.

Network of fellow anglers - This is the one where you will get lat/lon numbers, methods that are working, a call when someone really has them lit up good... You of course have to reciprocate and help. By joining here and participating, your on your way to establishing your network.

Autopilot - drives the boat straight, doesn't run over your lines, doesn't get tired, and doesn't ask for a turn to reel in fish, and doesn't drink your beer or eat your sandwich. Add to that, you won't have to yell at the helmsman either. Allows you to participate much more in the action at the back of the boat.

Some of this is pretty basic. It may or may not be new to you. Hope there's something you can use.

Great post Mike!

Unfortunately, the other 1/2 of Team Heavy will not be in attendance this weekend, as Bird Dog got hung up with work. Damn...

I might add to Mike's post that it seems with the ever-clearing water on Erie, that it can be difficult to catch walleyes consistently in the "blue" water...and we've had much better success in the "green" or "slightly stained" water.

Stay out of the mud though....muddy water = silver bass and sheephead (if any fish at all) and no walleyes.

One more thing - If you launch in the middle of the West basin, It's easier to go North or South. Sterling is the best for that. For instance if you know the fish are biting down near Luna pier - then launch down there or Bolles but it's a looooonnnngggg run to Stony if they're biting there. Especially in 3 footers. By the same token if you know the fish are biting at the banana dike (and they are!!!) Launch at Lake Erie metro park but it's a looooonnnggg way to the Mcdonalds buoy if they're biting there. Sterling is right in the middle and opens up the most opportunities. I have that network of cellphone buddies that Little Dandy is talking about and if they're not biting in Brest bay it's easiest to go either direction from there to where my buddies are getting them! As you talk to other anglers, exchange names, numbers, and any other info you can. I don't always find them either. Thank god for my buddies! It's the most important tool for finding them. Once I find them, I know what I have in my boat will catch a few!

thanks guys. we are trying to build (or join) a network to share info. we were out there when the police chopper came out of monroe for the m.o.b. but we didnt have the radio on. we were fishing out of sterling s.p. that day and the chopper flew right over us. we were probably 10 miles north of where it was flying in circles.

we have a 19 ft. sea ray with gps, marine radio and a planer board mast. i gave my fishing buddy the url and he should be joining soon (if not already). we will start to monitor channel 68 and see if we can pick up any info.

i will also try to provide any info i can on our success(or failure).

right now we seem to be having a hard time keeping the boards out and tight. should the boards be even with the back of the boat when they are out 30 yards?
i think we need to adjust the attatchment point farther back on the board. or, maybe the 19 footer just gets pushed around too easily. we are probably going to get a bigger boat this fall and turn it into a walleye hunting machine this winter.

Dumb it down? LOL!! Feel free to ask anything anytime! We're glad to help! The banana dike is a boomerang shaped stone island just south of the Detroit river mouth. It is manmade. Also called a spoils it keeps the waves from washing out some environmentally sensitive areas. It's part of the Pt. Mouille recreation area. The Mcdonalds range buoy is a light tower in Ohio water near the south end of the West basin. It marks the shipping channel. It is green in color. We will be referring to these and other water landmarks all summer. If there is any thing we can do to explain any of the lingo - let us know!!! Welcome aboard! There is a walleye smackdown at Toledo beach marina this weekend and there will be lots of other EA anglers there. You can launch the boat there and there is a cookout. You can meet and fish with lots of people from this site! they have a nice ramp.

Just like Mr. DUGGUN, I would like to be able to talk intelligently about the whereabouts of the local hotspots, or better yet, punch in the numbers for E-bouy, Sputnik, McDonalds, etc. I fished Brest Bay for three years, telling my buddy I was catching 'em at the Sputnik, only to find out that it was really was not even close. He still gives me crap about that! So, is there a map somewhere that lay's it out?

Here is a list of waypoints of some of the landmarks ON the lake. There are numerous landmarks that aren't on this list that are on land but visible from the water.
If any of the numbers are wrong, contact the website. I have nothing to do with them.

http://www.dwfonline.com/gps_waypoints.htm

Every port on this website has hundreds of local landmarks that really aren't in a glossary that I know of. The need is definitely there.

Cantgetenough, littledandy and others,

The information you've offered is great and Like Trophywife, I'm looking to fish lake Erie with great success as well, Most of my experience is in the rivers, some in sagbay and Erie, but I'd kill to get valid real time info like I've been reading here. You guys sound like you got a fix on the lake, Do you run charters? or just/mostly for sport fishing? Ive been to LE once around 5/24 and managed around 4 or 5 on BBs'

Since a common response from you folks is questions about what and where guys can and are running, I included a synopsis of my set up.

I have a 22' tin can with a Pboard mast I can run 8-12 rods, I have the gear to run harness's on BBs' - Diver discs stingers - bunches of stick baits - between my buddy and I. I'll tow and dunk any where, we have - Mich - Can - Oh permits.

GPS - Lowrance FF - VHF

Thanks in advance for any help on what, when, speeds ect.

Pete
