how critical is the piece of plywood that runs perpendicular to the keel between the stringers at the front of the engine. it doesnt look like it supports anything and its rotted. do i have to replace it on end to the other or just patch it. the boat is an 85 sea ray 230
thanks

Although this piece is certainly important (it usally holds the fuel tank in place)
I would be willing to bet it's not the only piece that is going bad

The wood that the boat manufactures put in their floors and transoms is similar to a house of cards each piece supports each other. Most are similarly as important as the other. When they start going bad it puts more stress on the others
Thinking this one piece is the only one needing replacing is quite the wishful thinking I would suspect
Best to have a good glass guy look it over and give you a thorough once over
This will give you a better idea of where you would be headed with some thing like this
