The results of the census trawls were void of young of the year alewives. I predict that magnum spoons will out produce regulars this coming season. I'm also going to experiment with a few magnum plugs, maybe saltwater. The fish are eating larger prey.

Last year I caught two lake trout in the mid teens that had 3-4# pink salmon in their stomachs. Big baits, I'm telling ya!

Big baits ... I bet big bait will work - just how big - I dont have anything the size of a 4# pink salmon - need super magnums.

I'm not the only one, I've heard from others about fish having big prey like salmon in their stomachs.

Had good luck with Magnums this year, big papa just sent me another 1/2 dozen, courtesy of Fishlander. I'm not giving away my small ones just yet, I tried the mup rig like I saw in GLA and it worked at times. Mup rig, two spoons same color, one small with a magnum trailing, I used 3 feet between, most hits on the magnum. Maybe we should be like Chinook Keith and think outside the box.

The last few years I have been fishing Magnum sizes almost exclusively when using spoons. Only one reason, I think they catch more fish!

Same here Mike. For the past several years I've done better with magnum spoons. I still run regulars on occasion, but not very often.

I've heard several tales of fish latching on to dipseys, flashers and dodgers. In a thread on another site several people are complaining about the snap swivels opening up on the back of their Fishcatchers. I think it is fish grabbing the Fishcatchers that is opening these snaps. Here's a link to a story about a fish that grabbed and held a dodger for a 5 minute fight before finally letting it's meal go. 3/4 of the way down by steelheader 159bm click here HUNGRY FISH

In my mind, as a salmonid faced with a dwindling to nonexistent alewife population, I'm going to grab any available prey of a larger variety. I'll expend a lot less energy doing that rather than chasing a small school of alewives around until they're gone before searching for another one. With a 3# fish in my belly, I can just chill and spend my energy digesting my meal. I'm tempted to put some hooks on some 00 dodgers this year, no joke.

Jim,

Saw a fishing show a year or two ago. They were fishing big lake trout up in Canada some where. Their lure of choice was a 6" LJ dodger with a large single hook on it.

Caught some nice fish. They had this on braided line and a 10 oz. weight if I remember correctly. Bouncing bottom or neer it.

Thanks for the feedback Richard. Now I won't feel like a total nut job when I try it. I caught walleye on #5 J-plugs last year, they might like the big spoons(dodgers) too. I saw some 6" spoons in a Cabela's catalog too. I believe it was the walleye edition. The spoons were by the musky baits and were called something or another Canoes. The color selection wasn't great but I should be able to doctor up some killers from what they have.
