I have just purchased a pair of okuma roller rods 15-30lb test.
Can anyone recommend what reels and line I should use.

Hey Trophy
You're going to love wire! It's my favorite. What is the most you want to spend on a reel for your rig?

For wire right?

I use #30 seven-strand wire and a Daiwa SG47LCA reel. I spooled the entire reel with wire.

Put a dipsy on one of those rods and get ready !

The SG47LCA holds 1000ft of 30# wire with no backing. You're gonna love it!! Holy crap!! at least a dozen deer just went around the pond behind the house.

Gary,

Welcome to the boards (it's about time!!).

30# 7-strand wire is what I use. Buy it in the 1000ft spools as this will fit nicely on the SG47LC reels. One spool per reel.

Does anyone use reels other than the Daiwa for their wire line rods? What about Okuma?

Hey Gary!
I didn't know that was you. It was a pleasure to meet you last weekend at the fishing show. I've always used the Daiwa SG47LC for wire rigs. I have used both the 20# and 30# Mason brown braided wire, 1000'. I prefer the 20# because I have noticed a significant increase in production over 30#. I've talked to many people that notice no increase from one to the other but in my experience it's the 20# hands down.

Extra care is required to keep wire kink free, 20# is more prone to kinking than 30#. If you treat wire like it is just another line, you will get kinks in it. If you treat it special and take steps to keep it tight at all times it will behave. I always cut the foot or two off the end before each day of fishing to remove the curls. Curls aren't harmful but they are prone to become kinks if you're not careful. It's best to just cut the curls out. One way I keep the wire tight is by sandwiching a 2" peice of surgical tubing (Luhr Jensen snubber material) between two 10mm beads above the swivel. That way you can cinch the wire down tight while unhooking a fish, changing baits etc. I like the 10mm super glow beads I got from Curtis at Purple Taco for a little extra attraction too.

One thing about your terminal end. A lot of guys like crimps. I'm not one of them. With crimps you might tend to be a little less willing to cut and re-crimp which could result in lost fish and tackle. I tie a #3 Sampo coastlock swivel to the end of my wire with a simple overhand loop knot. It doesn't look like it would hold but it does. I've never had that knot fail. It's fast and easy, you could tie it with your eyes closed.

Jim,
Just one overhand loop knot?

Yep. Just one. It sure doesn't seem like it would hold, does it? I've yet to have either the 20# wire break or the knot fail. How do you connect your swivel?

Jim,
I have been using crimp sleeves and go through a lot of them because, like you, I like to keep the curls and kinks out.
Your method of using an overhand knot sounds like a no brainer to me since it would be a lot faster and make it more likely for one to change out any questionable line even while fishing. I use a bead to help straighten out curls and I do like your idea of using a length of tubing between two of them.

I also use the overheand knot method and have not had a failure. Works great and as simple as they come.

I just picked up two wire rigs this winter as well. I am running Okuma Convector 30 Linecounters for both. One on a blue diamond roller and one on an older Eagle Claw roller. Instead of using the bead-tubing-bead thing I am going to try something a little different that I picked up somewhere. I tied about 20 feet of 50# power pro to the wire using a Uniknot (power pro) backed down on a single over hand knot. There is enough power pro on to allow the wire to always be fully spooled on the reel unless it is in use. Whether in storage or landing fish or changing baits the wire is on the reel and should not cause any curling. The guy that suggested this has done it this way and never had a curl problem and never has had the knot fail. Plus that section of power pro can be trimmed back all weekend and then replaced between trips if need be.

Jim speaks the truth regarding the overhand knot. He told me about this tip last season & it ties up very easily.

I'm still waiting for Jim to remove the jinx from my wire diver rig though.
