Every April I leave the friendly confines of Lake Michigan for a couple weekends and head to the Wolf River, where my family has fished during the Spring spawning run for over 50 years.

This year I actually got lucky and hit the height of the run. We put over 50 walleyes on the dock and about the same amount of northerns. Walleyes were up to 26-1/2" and averaged around 22" (the larger ones went back to spawn another day) and the northerns ranged from hammerhandles to 38".

Yes, those are cane poles in the pictures. That's how we fish for them: off a raft with minnows and rapalas suspended 3-6 feet down in the current. Believe it or not, this is incredibly effective for catching fish on their way back from spawning. Most fishermen will diligently pound bottom with jigs and miss all the fish that are coming back.

Wow!! who is the good looking guy holding that 38" pike? hahahahhahaha I really had a good time up there Josh. Don't you think its time that you admit to being an aspiring perch jerker? The first step is admitting it. hehe

Walleye Insider magazine had a story on Winneconnie, WI(spelling?) "pole ish" walleye fishermen.

Cane Poles - now if you were just using kernels of corn - that would be totally old school. Looks like fun - haven't fished a cane pole for about 35 years.
