Any input on using split rings on the front of spoons?

Some come with them stock - others don't. I'm using DUOLOCK snaps (as opposed to coastlock style) and thinking of running my spoons without split rings. I've heard that you only need splitrings if using the coastlock style snaps or tying direct.

Note: I bought from rings from a spoon / fly manufacter and they were just JUNK! Once opened to put on the spoon they never snapped back. They just stayed open. I could only imagine the trouble that it could cause. I bought some generic ones at Fleet Farm and they work great !

Pat--I've always felt that I don't want to add any weight to the spoon. Some spoon makers ACTUALLY WATER TEST their spoons, so adding weight in the form of a split ring raises the possibility of changing the action. In that vein, this year I'm only using snaps without swivels to attach my spoons to the line. If line twist gets to be a problem, I'll add a swivel about 6ft ahead. Some really good fishermen I know think it doesn't make any difference. Nothing to back me up--just an opinion. Lets hear from the rest of the guys.

My motto is if the blade comes with a split ring,I leave it on.

Same effect for without a ring(no ring added).

I don't think that adding a split ring ruins the action, it might change it a little. To the detriment or betterment depends on the day. I have added split rings to several of my magnum Silver Streaks and haven't really noticed any increase or drop off in production. I really don't think that the minute amount of weight that a snap swivel or split ring adds to the front of the spoon amounts to much. Extra weight on the hook end of the spoon now is an entirely different matter. In my mind the front end doesn't kick around, the rear end does.

According to a manufacturer that i talk with frequently, the way i understand what he tells me is it has more to do with the fredom for the front end to wiggle. If you have swivels that constrict this motion, use a ring. If you have wide swivels, then its not really necessary. He sells spoons both ways, but a lot of his personal stash have the rings. I add to some and not others. no ryme or reason in my box really
