Just a pet peeve but I wish all the tournys on the Lake Michigan Tournament trail would work on standardizing the rules a little more.

Cut bait is a classic example. Holland didn't have their rules posted anywhere on the www. On Tuesday, I called one of the tourny organizers to ask if cut bait was to be allowed since I wanted to thaw some and brine it if it was. I got a reply like "yea, I think so??? I am not aware of any rule against it".

Well after thawing out 18 herring strips I get to the captains meeting and read "artificial lures only" in the rules. So then you have to find out if cut herring strips are "artificial baits" since they aren't live baits but simply a piece of a fish. I mean "jig and pig" (pork frogs or pork strips) are a staple on the pro bass events which require artificial baits?

Anyway, it turns out I wasted 18 strips which is a bummer.

I have been playing with cut bait for the first season and I can say that I don't think it is the only way to catch fish but I have been having good success with the Church Tackle Shock Wave heads which I find easy to use (no tooth picks, just snap the strip in the head and adjust the hook length) so I think it is a good thing to have as an option.

I don't understand why some tournys don't allow it and others do. I mean it is available to anyone to use or not so why ban it?

Just curious as to why some events don't allow it?

My guess would be that tournaments that don't allow cutbait are heavily supported by a spoon manufacturer - so they are protecting their sponsors by disallowing the use of cut bait.

Other than that I have no idea why it wouldn't be allowed.

I know some of the redfish tours and BASS only allow artifical baits - I'm not sure of their motivations but it seems like a similar restriction.

I think the BASS and redfish tours ban the use of live/dead bait for fish survival reasons, since all fish are released after the weigh ins. Way better chance of having a gut hooked fish without an artificial.

The Grand Haven area tourneys will continue to ban meat until: 1)someone in the meat business steps up and offers them the cash to become a big time sponsor or 2) the big time spoon/fly sponsors that exist now introduce cut bait products as part of their product line. I would say one or both are likely in the very near future.
