Our charter season is now officially over and it is time to review this years highlights. We had a really great season with thanks to Raider, A-Tom-Mik, Big Papa, Okuma, and Ridge Back Rattler, which joined our prostaff team later this season.
Spring of ’05 brought us some great fishing with a good number of salmon early this year. We remember a nice 17.5# Brown caught by Dave Kosslop during the spring LOC unfortunately he wasn’t entered. We had a win and big fish during a local tournament on Memorial Day weekend with the Brown family (Toni’s sister) on board manning the rods. Raider spoons shined during the spring with 2 colors of core and a Polecat being the hottest.
June bought its usual slow down in a BIG way. For a couple of weeks there we thought it would never end, then it did. When the lake finally set up and the fish turned on they were feverishly hungry. Numerous bend and twisted spoons came back with salmon still attached. The Polecat once again was the ruler when pulled behind a forgotten teaser called a Luhr Jenson Six-pac Schoolie. Weather off a rigger or copper it just pulled fish in.
August came and meat rigs took center stage. A-Tom-Mik Three Flys behind Oki Slasher was our main stay. Golden Boy (Golden Retriever) with a Clear head and red twinkies, Green with green glow, Kermit with green spatter head and green flies, Blue Angel with blue three fly all had their days. Golden Boy (Golden Retriever) with a Clear head and red twinkies, Green with green glow, Kermit with green spatter head and green flies, Blue Angel with blue three fly all had their days. The Fair Haven Challenge bought some good friends together for a nice weekend of fishing and a BBQ. First place taken by home town favorites Screamer who proved this season taking the overall win in the Lake Ontario Pro-Am Tournaments in the Amateur division.
End of August and Early September A-Tom-Mik Flys started taking center stage. A new varient made from a mistake order soon became a favorite. Named the TG fly after Tommy Germain (an Oswego Captain) who works very closely with Tom Allen. This fly behind a Mountain Dew Spin Doctor and a black mag dipsey was hard to keep in the water.
We also got to begin testing on a new heavy weight Ridge Back which should be out next season. At 11 lbs it tracked well with my 14 and 15 pound rigger weights. It is better suited for some of the deep water presentations we have in Lake Ontario. On more than one occasion I would watch fish on my sounder come from 150’ down up to my high rigger at 75’ to find out just what this noise was and many times grab at an offering just 5’ behind the weight. The 9# balls were used during a recent bass trip. Water conditions were too rough to drift so we trolled stick baits short behind the Rattlers for some fantastic action.
We still have a few fun trips to try to break the 30 lb mark this season. We again stand at 29.5 lbs being the top fish with many in the 25-28.5lb areas. Thanks to all that made this season possible. We’re looking forward to seeing you all next season.
