I'm currently in the process of adding sections of core to my Magda 20's and 30's. When I stripped the 10# mono off the 20's the other night, there was about 1450' on the spool. Is it safe to make the assumption that 20# mono is twice the diameter of 10#...and if so...would 600' of 20# Big Game plus 2 or 3 colors fit on a Magda 20?

For those of you that use the 30's, how much backer do you use for your 4-6 color rigs??

Am I wasting my time using Mono backer in the first place??? Suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks guys.

i use mono backing on all cores cheetah. Not familiar with the walleye sized 20 reels. Only have one 30 and it has wire on it. 30's are larger a bit than a diawa 47. Check the reel capacity compared to a diawa 47 and let me know. I have figes on that. best way to judge line is to look at the diameter measurement and compare that way. either in thousands of an inch or mm. either way, you can convert if you need to. I use .45mm 20# on my stuff.

Here's a link to the Okuma page with specs on your reel. If they are correct, your reel will hold 160yds. of 20# mono. I have used mono backing for core and had no issues but I prefer a braid like Power Pro or equivalent for extra backing capacity. Mono is a lot more economical however and a good quality mono will handle the chore for you. http://www.okumafishing.com/products/reels/magda/magda.htm

Clark,
I run 2 and 3 color cores off CV-30's i back them with 20# ande. I feel the 20's wouldn't have sufficient backing for a long run. The Magda and Convector have the same capacity per size. I load mine by spooling them backwards (leader first then core and backing) on to and old reel first then transfer it to the reel i'll use so I always wind up with a full reel. You could used the same concept and note the footage if useing a counter or count # of passes while loading the backing.

Thanks guys. Still haven't decided what to do...best thing would probably be to delegate the 20's to walleye duty and the 30's to salmonoid duty.

Much appreciated.

The one problem with using mono for backing with lead core is that the core sheath will hold moisture and then not allow the mono to dry out completely and can cause the mono to " rot" , not really a problem if you change line like your are supposed to. I use Power Pro for my backing , don't have to worry about it rotting for several years and I know it is strong.

Pauly gave me a tip on how to attach the braid to the spool to keep it from slipping when getting started. Thanks a bunch SalmonSwami....
