I run big wood boards all the time on Lake Erie.

Are you asking if big boards are better than the plastic inline boards or are the wood boards better than the plastic ones you can buy already made?

Both the inlines and big wood boards have their place. Whether or not a homemade wood set of boards is 'better' than a pre-made purchased set is something you have to decide for yourself.

The vast majority of the charter operators in my area (Monroe, MI) are running wood boards. They don't have issues with storage space a smaller boat would have. They do require durability and the performance to tow 4,5,6 lines off each side.

Two guys fishing an 18' aluminum boat would probably be better served running 4 in-line setups. Four guys on the same boat, probably a mast/ski setup.

See this article for a little info on running the big wood boards.
