warming temps, rain and winds is putting the push on the Walleye spawn and seeing it won't be long until Opening Day!
Water temps. running in the 40' mark and light winds yesterday allowing the Michigan DNR to conduct their spawning and tagging operations on the upper Bay.
Dick Harrison and associate Brian conducted this operation this past week getting the necessary spawn as well tagging approimately 500 plus walleye with their "lip" tags that we encourage fisherman when catching these many tagged fish to report and send in these numbers to more understand our Walleye population. For more info you can check out the Michigan DNR website http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/
In addition they also conducted tests concerning the VHS disease (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia) on this fishery with reports coming out later into the season here.
HIGH NOTE: In talking with Mike Herman from the Escanaba DNR office he has said we've got one of the best fisheries in the midwest with an estimated population of over 450,000 legal size Walleye, this great growth rate is attributed too the excellent forage sources including gobies, many minnow sources and much, much more.
ON A FISHING NOTE: WE ARE SEEING SOME ANGLERS ON THE WATERS NOW IN SEARCH FOR PERCH, HAVEN'T HEARD OF ANY BIG CATCHES YET BUT THAT SHOULD IMPROVE EACH DAY.
DOCKS ARE NOW IN AT ALL THE LAUNCH SITES OTHER THAN THE RAPID RIVER SITE WHICH SOON SHOULD BE IN.
KEEP IN TOUCH FISHERMAN AND WE'LL UPDATE DAILY UNTIL THE MAY 15TH. OPENER!

Here's some of the photos and MDNR video clip of the day's activities;
