A Case For Short Leaders On Core

I breathed a big sigh of relief as I watched the 14#+ steelhead slip into the net. The odds are always in the Bow's favor right up until that last tense second that you know she's yours for keeps. I remember wondering what had kept that silver missle from streaking airborne. Six colors of leadcore line had a lot to do with it I'm sure. However previous experiences with leadcore and steelhead usually ended badly with a leaping fish spitting the hook back at me. So what kept this brute from jumping? In the past I had used long leaders of 50-75'on my leadcores. After limited success I started inquiring around as to the leader lengths other fishermen used and found that the average was much shorter than mine. I shortened up to 25' and started getting more hits, especially on choppy days. I contend that the reason for my increased success was the action of the leadcore stalling and falling, then surging and rising was more directly transmitted to my lures on the shorter leaders. Longer leaders, mono in particular as it floats, would seem to likely act as a dampener to this action in this nut's mind
Oh yeah! The steelhead! Is it also possible that the shortened leader also transmitted the drag of the leadcore more constantly on that baby? The fish made some impressive displays of anger on the surface but I don't believe that it ever left the water. The leader length in this case was less than 8' if memory serves correctly. That's right, 8' and I've seen shorter on Salmonhead's core rigs. Mine have dwindled down to 15' to start and don't get retied until they are less than 5' or so and I catch more fish on core than ever before with longer leaders. Did the short leader illicit the strike and tame the beast? I say yes!
