Aholoway brought this to our attention in the salmon and trout forum but I'm adding it here to get more attention for this important issue.

The MIDNR is asking for our opinion on the topic of changing the current limit of "5/no more than 3 of any species" to "5 in any combination". I hope everybody that fishes in Michigan waters will take a second to state you opinion on this important topic.

I sent an email the other day Wingy. Hope it goes through, but I can understand what the guys from Superior are saying on other boards as well.

I hope everyone knows what they are asking for, I get many complaints from fisherman when we catch 18. Just cant imagine the negative comments when we catch 30 a trip. Just be careful with what you ask as I believe our fishery is more fragile than it has been in years since the BKD era. You didn't have to worry about the King limit cause it couldn't be attained. Just remember that wasn't that many years ago. If the limit is raised there should be a 15 fish boat limit. That's just my opinion and don't complain if the Charters are catching to many fish.

I hear what you are saying Willis, but the fact remains that Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin have the 5 fish limit (browns, rainbows, cohos, kings) in place and I don't hear of anyone complaining about charter catches on that side of the pond (and I've fished that side a lot over the last 10 years). If anything, it encourages fishing from recreational fisherman, particularly since fuel costs have risen so dramatically over the past 3 years.

You are correct that attention needs to paid to the fragility of the fishery. I imagine the fact that so many unknowns exist dissuades any major changes on the part of the MI DNR.

Hopefully there will be some sort of common ground met on this issue, but I still feel the 3/5 rule in Michigan needs some tweaking.

3/5 or 5 fish really doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things IMO. If it means that a couple guys can stay out and fish for longer that's fine - but perhaps a boat limit is appropriate solution - there is very little reason why I would need to catch a 5 fish limit for everyone on EO for an outing.

Yes some days are over quick - back to the dock for breakfast type of days - and I understand it if someone was disappointed that they drove hours to do that - but on the other hand they more then likely just had one heck of a morning fishing. Frankly if you are catching at a rate that will end it early - it wont take long to catch the rest of the ticket. Maybe in some ways it's better to have to go pound for lakers or go after steelhead from the sense of prolonging the experience.
