Events at a recent tournament has illuminated an aspect of being a responsible tournament angler that will be in the forefront of my thinking at weigh-ins. After talking to a number of professional anglers in salmon, walleye, and bass tournaments over the last couple of days each trail has basically the same rule ...

Check your weigh slip before you sign. After signature re-weighing is not allowed and no changes can be made.

I've always looked at the signing of the weigh-in slip as somewhat of a formality, but it must be looked at more critically. If you beleive there has been a weigh-in error - either technical or clerical - DO NOT sign your wiegh-in slip. Before you have signed your slip you still maintain recourse for re-weighing of your catch or addressing of your greivance.

The bottom line is don't be afraid to question the weigh-in if you think something has gone awry.

I also heard comments about certain weigh in abnormalities from a tournament last weekend and could not agree more with your comments Greg. It is absolutely vital to 1) have the right fish in your cooler (I have seen this mistake) and 2) make sure you agree with the the proposed total BEFORE signing.

Another safeguard that I have not always been consistent in using is to weigh my fish on my own certified scale that I carry on board before our official weigh in. Despite the fact that it is handheld, it is normally accurate within a pound or two of our total weight. This is one way to double check your box before your sign in agreement.

I learned a similar lesson in a college golf tournament. My playing partner for the day kept my official score. I also kept my score on another card. When finished, he said..."Clark, I have you for 70, correct?" That is what I had shot....

I signed the back of the card, and didn't even look at the totals or hole by hole record. Come to find out, he actually had me for 71, and I had signed an incorrect scorecard, and I was DQ'd from the tournament.

I would have been medalist that day.

Lesson learned....have an idea what your fish weigh before hitting the line.
