The recent discussion we have had on lead core line may be for nothing as there has been a bill introduced that will ban lead sinkers for fishing , this is house bill 6114 and it is in committee right now. The problem with the way the bill is worded is that it bans all lead for fishing , not just sinkers. It would mean the end to lead core line , downrigger weights , 1 pound balls , dipsey divers and jet divers { they have lead keels} , a lot of lures as the have lead based paints and metals , and probably a lot of other things we havn't thought about yet. New York passed the same type of bill recently because water fowl pick things off from the bottom and eat it , including lead sinkers and get lead poisoning. New Yorks bill has a size restiction in it , I beleive it is no lead sinkers smaller than 1/4 inch in diam. We ned to write our state reps. and the members of the Land Use Committee and express our concerns about the bill as it is written. It may not make it out of committee this year but you can be sure that it will be reintroduced next year if it doesn't. Look up house bill 6114 on the Mich. Gov. web site and then go to legislature page to get the address's of the reps. from your area and start writing and making your voice be heard.

well there is some tungsten version of lead core I think.

It's defintely going to make the use of drop leads (or not leads) a very expensive proposition. Personally I'm not in favor of drop leads - where you purposefully are dropping large chunks of lead into the environment - but it is a effective technique. I use snap weights - If I lose the weight it's not on purpose. But either tungsten balls or even steel are going to make it difficult (I think) to make your own drop weights - I assume much higher melting temperature.

Realistically I doubt any water fouls is eating a two ounce drop lead in 100' of water, which is what is wrong with wholesale legislature written in such broad language. Not to mention this would give the DNR and others more incentive to board fishing boats which in the end will generate ill will when we are trying to maintain positive relationships with these agencies.

(b) iii - is disturbing because it's a 'catch all' which then becomes a matter of litigation.

Right now the bill is in committee and probably won't make it out befoe the end of the year and if it don't then it dies in committee and would have to be reitroduced , which it probably will be at some point . We need to keep an eye on it and keep in touch with our state reps. and let them know the bill as it is written is BAD. Letter writing and phone calls are the best way , not nasty grams or harassing phone calls but good contacts that show we are concerned. We vote these people in and they are our reps. and work for us and we do have a right to express our views to them. Like I said , at this point it is probably a dead issue but we do need to stay on top of it.
