How many of you guys use cut bait and what kind of success have you had with it? Whats the pro/cons of it ? Thinking of looking more into it for next year , have tried it a little but no real success with it yet. I don't think it is the end all of baits but I do think that it does have it's days. Any comments?

A pretty good group of our fishing buddies used cutbait this year. Some of them continued to use it - others stopped using it because it only produced equivalent to their other gear. I'm not sure it produced when other stuff wouldn't have produced - no way to prove it but my gut tells me no. We never used them and our catches were equivalent or better than most cut-baiters that we know.

I do like the rigs - they're prtty cool - the twinkie rig is what was being used. A cutbait holder and then a string of flybodies and beads - usually the twinkie rig was hooked to a big 12" flasher and most often used on wire or mono divers. We found the quality of the cutbait to flucuate from batch to batch - Lakeside Fishing Shop in St. Clair Shores seemed to have the best supply and manufactuerer of cut herring strips.

You definitely need a cutting/rigging station the are pretty messy to work with - we found the we often had to trim the head side to get it to fit ain the cut bait holder. Then simply jam in a toothpick to pin the bait to the holder and a way you go.

Bottom Line - it's another weapon in the arsenal - but I haven't seen any real data to determine whether or not it makes a difference. Fo those who use them it is a matter of confidence, just like most things in fishing.
