We were having an interesting conversation about big fish contests for some of the Lake Michigan Tournies. The topic in question was whether in a big fish contest that pays multiple prizes for the big fish should a team be able to claim mulitple prizes.

For example, if there was a contest that paid decreasing amounts of cash for the largest king

Big King $2,000
Second King $800
Third King $600
etc...

and Team A had the Big King and Third King should they be paid for both?

I'll answer first ... I beleive that for the Pro divisions prizes should be paid for multiple fish in the big fish contests. The Pros are Pros and it's all about the competition and if Team A can put two fish in paying spots they should get paid.

For the amateur's side I think that you should get paid for your best placement of fish. I think on the am side it's more important to be as inclusive as possible.

That's my opinion ...

That sounds reasonable to me. I dont know how the amateur teams would feel about having a less favorable system though. I do agree that steps should be taken when possible to include more teams in on the show after the show. Maybe "x" number of mystery weights to pay in the amateur division to even things out?

Mystery weight prizes are good. Rogers City did that when we used to fish that tourney. Helped make sure that everyone weighed in for the day.....

Within the main tournament, they also had "daily boat" prizes....three heaviest fish each day per boat...and the prize money increased each day...

Personally, I think that big fish means big fish. If one team catches all 3, then they deserve the prizes for top 3 big fish.

I agree that mystery weights and other gimmicks add motivation and interest, but that is not the same as "Big Fish" in my book.

I would be disappointed if I had the two largest fish and only got paid for one of them. But if it were stated that only one large fish per boat would be a winner, then that would be acceptable.

I agree with Tom and Bob. If you catch the 3 largest fish, you should get paid for all of them.

I agree with greg et al. if you get all 3, get paid for all 3. You proved your superiorness for that day or tourney. Get paid for it. Next time you may not be so lucky.

Ditto for me on paying for all winning fish. I know there are some tourneys which specify "Only one prize per team" but does that mean if a team wins - let's say 5th place for the total aggregate weight & points category that they could not also win the third place largest salmon category? Doesn't seem fair to me.
