The SWR or "Secret Weapon Rig" is basically a 2-color leadcore that is run off a downrigger. On TeamEO, we call it the SRW...Short Range Weapon

we actually will run 2 and 3 colors of lead for our SWRs and it can be an effective technique for catching fish on the riggers. Good things is these rods can also be used off of boards for 2 or 3 color leadcores - which can be highly productive as well.

The naswra "not a secret weapon rig anymore"
It does work very well.
A very good addition to the spread when fish are a bit standoffish.
Some guys never troll without one in the water.
I tend to use them when I find fish are hitting leadcore.
Anytime I think the fish are neutral negative, or boat shy.

Some might call me crazy but I might have been running the back of a particular boat one time in deep water with a frickin unbelivable current when we couldn't get more than a 45 degree down angle on a rigger with a 13 lb weight...

Marking fish 100 feet plus...

And I might have thrown a full core off my rigger and dropped the rigger to 60 feet... And it very well did catch some fish...

What' ya think I we oughta name that one...

I start with about 20' of leader and use it until it's about 6' long. I think shorter is better in general terms as the longer the leader the less of the up and down motion of the leadcore is transfered to the bait. But to avoid having to constantly attache new leader to the core I start with a mid length - like 20'
