What do you want to use them for, what do you want to use on them? I prefer inlines and I use them for Brown in close, flat lines, lead lines, and copper out deaper, and for walleyes. For me inlines work best. Some guys use some pretty big boards for all of this and add divers, and # balls to them to. Either one works good, you just need to figure out what you are going to use them for and then figure out which one works better for you.

I would respond that it depends on what you plan to do with them. I know many walleye guys use the big boards or Otter Boats on Erie, however, inline boards are much more popular with those of us that chase salmon.

From my perspective as someone that fishes for salmon exclusively I run a combination of different inline boards depending on the application. For leadcores of varying length I run Church boards and for a surface program I run Willie boards. The nice thing about inline boards is that they allow you to reset your baits back into the same position in the spread where they triggered a strike. In certain instances that may not matter, however, when running varying lengths of leadcore it is required to ensure the longest/deepest cores are closest to the boat, while the shorter/shallower sets are further away. To accomplish this with big boards, it would potentially require you to reset several rods particularly as you run 3 or 4 leadcores per side.

I also find the inline boards are easier to store and deploy.

The big boards are nice since you do not have to fight a fish and a board, but due to the reasons I noted above I stick with the inlines.

Hope that helps.

Tim

There is very good insight in prior replies to your question. Did you happen to catch the article here this month on big boards? There's some good information on their application to walleye fishing.
