i am planning on running copper for the first time this year and have 100yards 45# howies copper line. i had planned on running this off my planer board but was told it would get in the way out there and the board would not pull it properly. i was told to run it down the shute my quetion is is this correct info and if i run this down the shute will i have to clear this long line with each hookup from other rods or is the sink rate enough that it will stay low and out of the way.

That would depend on the type of in-line board you are using , it should work good off a quality board like an Off-Shore or a Church board. Have never had an issue with it tangling with other lines but we do run it out to the side a little bit further than lead core on in-line boards. We put our lead core out beyond the copper when we run them in combo as the lead core don't run quite as deep as the copper or at the same angle in the water. Others may have differing opinions.

Welcome aboard, thomasa29!

We regularly run our 300' copper lines on inline planer boards (Church walleye boards in our case). We treat them just like long leadcores and keep them on the inside of a multi-core spread. We generally run 3 boards per side...with copper on the inside, something like a 7 or 8 color leadcore in the middle, and a 3 or 5 color leadcore on the outside. Tangles are not any more of an issue than with leadcore...avoid sharp turns and make sure you set and clear your lines in the right order.

The biggest problem with copper is letting it out...it bird's-nests really easily if you don't keep tension on it. We always thumb the line and often we will even keep the clicker on and pull it out by hand until we have 20 yds. or so in the water and it can go out by itself.

Tom

Welcome Thomasa!

I'm also going to be running a 300 foot cooper for the first time this season. I'm looking forward to trying it out! I also am planning on basically treating it just like a core.

welcome aboard Thomas.

The biggest thing to remember when run copper in combination with any other long lines - leadcore or clean birds, copper goes over nothing - never swim a board with copper on it over anything else including other coppers.

So coppers must be run on the inside - or in the case of multiple coppers on the same side - if the outside one goes - you need to move the inside one into its spot because you can swim the replacing copper over anything.

Copper goes over Nothing!

So Greg... let me get this straight... Your saying that copper can't swim over any other lines right??

G, i'm lost with your post! We run our 150 over the top of the 300 all the time? We run our outside cores over the top? I know you can't run copper over the top of the core but, copper over copper is ok when i've done it. Are you trying to say 2 like sizes? Or am i ust getting lucky? I would never run a 300 outside a 150! So I guess I'm lost with your post!!!!

You lost - what's the chance of that?

I would say that running a 150 over a 300 will work most of the time, it's working for you, however it is a more dangerous manuver because of the dive angle of copper in relation to doing it with cores. Especially when trying to swim it in to place inside an outside core but outside a longer copper. With the 150 to 300 combination is is a little easier because of the seperation but when you start talking tighter 225' over 275' or other intermediate lengths it starts to get little more dicey.

But a big shooter tackle entrepenuer such as yourself can afford to make copper balls for the recycler LOL.

In the case of moving the board into another position is the case of like distance coppers - yes.

NICE!!! LOL I see what you are saying! And you are right with that example! Just trust me and reel in the other copper and reset the middle! We tried what you said and set the 300 inside the 600 and WOW! It was aa ton of FUN when we got a fish on the 600!! I thought leadcore tangles where bad...

I do think that copper may indeed by the king of the hill in regards to total annihilation tangles Must be the soft pliability of the copper or something.
