We have a Lowrance LCX – 18C Sonar/GPS combo.
That has a dual frequency transom mount transducer. 50/200 kHz.
On our new boat we have the option to place a transducer through the hull or stick with the transom mount. Any suggestion, to which installation is better for an inboard?
Looking to upgrade to the large screen Lowrance LCX-26c HD and LCX-111c HD Sonar/GPS combo this winter. Was wondering what you thought about the combo pack or setting up a separate sonar and GPS unit. What units do you recommend?

Thanks,

Kimmy

I heard good things about thru hull transducers. I personally have only used transom mount which can be somewhat tricky to get adjusted right. Hence, my next boat will have a thru hull transducer.

As for the gps/graph combo unit. For the money you are looking at spending, I would steer away from Lowrance and buy a Raymarine C120 display, with the DSM300 sounder module, and the Raystar 125 GPS Antenna. You can also tie in a radar unit as well. I've seen this unit in action and all I can say it is awesome!

Hope this helps.

If you have any suggestions,
Where would I go to get the best price for the Raymarine C120 display, with the DSM300 sounder module, and the Raystar 125 GPS Antenna.

Thanks,

Kimmy

Kimmy, we got the C120 system for the Team EO boat from the great people at Mariner's Centre in Muskegon http://www.marinerscentre.com/. Greg and Jan took really good care of us and did a super installation job too. I recommend you give them a call...they are one of the sponsors of EA and Team EO.

The C120 and accompanying gadgets are nothing short of space age. The EO dash looks like Houston Control. I really like the way that all of the components interact and interface with each other.

As far as tranducer selection, the basics is that any boat with outboards or I/O configurations typically stay with transom mounts. Inboards normally go with through hull. It has to do with mounting space and disturbances at the ducer. the ducer needs to run in clean bubble free water to work properly. For really good advice, call a certified shop like Mariners center in Muskegon or get on Raymarine's website and check out the transducer selection guide that is on there somewhere. If you are serious about an upgrade, I would go with Raymarine or Furuno and stay clear of the Lorance products. Too many issues with them, not to mention they wont work well with a fishhawk.

Good luck

The Raymarine site also has excellent advice on mounting transducers on the transom, where to put them, and how to position them in relation to the transom. There is a forum where you can ask a question, and you'll get 100 or so responses. Plus there is a section on answers to FAQs. I checked it for tramsom mounts, and then repositioned mine last spring, and it performs tons better as a result!!
