what pitch prop? are sure it has the rite gear ratio lower unit ?
are you sure the shift cable is adjusted corectly ?
If shift cable is not adjusted rite it makes the ignition missfire with the smaller motors you can tell by the motor shaking violently , seems with the big blocks its hard to tell its interupting
if it has any of the above its going to be like you sai
just some things to check

if you ove rev the motor look out for one of these coming out at you LOL

let us know we will fix it up

I have the same boat , mine is 9'6" beam and had the 270h.p./ 350 OMC Cobra engine , was very underpowered. I repowered with a 388 stroker motor that makes approx. 340 h.p. and it is like a new boat.Has all the torque I need to get the boat on plane with out using the trim tabs and it runs in a following sea with out bogging down at all , over all very happy with the way it runs. I did have to play around with the props like Frank said to get it running the way it is now , I think I have a 14.5x15 on mine and I have a 4 blade 15x16 that works good but hard to get my trolling speed down low enough.. I did add an electronic ignition to the OMC / Prestolite distributer and it runs good but not very happy with the way the shift interuper works with the setup (I did follow the directions for it), would like to find a new factory electronic igniton for it. Maybe a Mercruiser or Crusader if they would fit and still work with the shift intrerupter system that OMC use's.The boat should not be losing power/RPM's and backfiring as you say yours is , find that problem and you will probably find it runs the way it should.I know for a fact these boats are not speed demons and mine will cruise real nice about 23 to 26 mph and run wide open at about 33 mph depending on wave conditions and number of people on board. Over all I have been very happy with the boat for the price I paid for it.

well...after being towed in,engine quit,it seems a pin in the new distrib. broke.jasper guys were in town for the syracuse nationals and had some ideas.they are standing behind their product.this is engine #2.first one blew distributer gear into a millon pieces.after new distrib. she seems much better.almost on plane @3000,tries hard but not quite.i have a new carb. on order.old one is kaput.am trying an edelbrock (spelling?).i think that will do it.and i know the boat won't be a rocket but 10.1 @3700 rpms was way slow.and thanks for the replys.mike did put an after-market up-grade on my shifter, much smoother.no long delay w/ low rpms between gears anymore.if you want his number to find out what he did let me know.and i thought it was nice of the jasper guys to test ride the boat.my oil pressure has been a tad high.if the lighter oil they suggested doesn't lower it in a few more hrs.they are going to replace the pump.and pay labor.sorry for the length of post.will try to be brief in future.and i like the boat overall.cabin is wonderfull on week-end stays and the ride is nice smooth and dry.i'll post after this next re-pair and see what happens.
