Hi everyone. Today I bought a 1989 Sea Ray 200 Cuddy Cabin no engine or out drive (prior engine 4.3 L merc). For parts I have a 1988 Sea Ray Seville with a good running 4.3 L merc. I still have to go ahead and take the engine out and remove and install the outdrive. So my question is what all should I make sure to change(bearings, seals, gaskets, betls etc.) no matter if its good now to make sure I have a good reliable engine. Not to familiar with this engine im sure you guys know of the do’s? Thank you

-Tom-

Maybe the description is deceiving Im not asking for the general change the belt, put in new plugs, wires. Im looking for specifics such as there a seal behind the “whatever” that I should consider changing.. since im not tearing down the engine what should I note to change that is perhaps problematic in this engine or a must for the age.

first how is the oil psi at warm idle? have you done compression chks on all cyl? Any salt water history? Pressure test cooling system and block. Ok everything pass's replace the oil pump replace the timing set and water pump and fuel pump. While you have pan off roll the motor over and chk the bottom of the cyl bores see how much play there is between the pistons and cyl bores. Don't know how much you want to spend but not much scense it putting it in and having to take it back out unless you are planning on just getting a season or 2 out of it. Also keep in mind if the donor was used for water sking it probably spent most of it's life at or near full throttle. Good luck

If it was me this is what i would consider changing if any of these parts have not been changed in the last year or so
Stone fuel filter on top of the fuel pump (if it has one)
All boots and gimble bearing transom bracket shift cable
Water pump in stern drive
Starter on motor
Spark plugs
Distributor cap
Exhaust boots on exhaust risers in boat
Rear motor mounts
Thermostat on motor
Engine oil and install remote oil filter kit possibly a remote drain kit
Some of these items may not need to be changed but for long term reliability and to make job go smoothly this would be my list not to mention the fact that it’s super easy to take care of this stuff while the motor is out of the boat
i hope its safe to assume the transom bracket is still in the newer boat? If it is all the new part will fit rite on there is no real good reason to mess with it

The transom bracket is indeed on there and the same, but since the new boat is an 89 if comes with the standard black outboard. And the sea ray that i have for parts is an 88 and has the special edition white outboard. Everything would bolt right up but i just dont want to have a black transom bracket and a white outdrive. Is it a nightmare to change?

If every thing comes apart all rite its not that hard to change just would be a lot faster to get a coule cans of drive spray paint masking tape and paint it black . color is the only real difference .
and you will need a new transom gasket and some polysufide sealer two man job takes a couple hours

Pulled motor today and took the outdrive off.. so far everythings going smooth. Checked out the transom bracket and the one on the parts boat is in better condition (the exhaust boot was wripped and a few other things). Judgeing by the way that the y pipe looks on the parts boat its a low hour or very well maintained engine..i mean hell its been sitting in my yard about 8 yrs.plus if i go through everything ill know its all up to par and sleep better at night. However what i did notice is that.. on the 4.3 that i pulled out of the sevelle its short one wire in the harness. the main harness which is left in the 89 200 cuddy cabin has one more wire i believe its light brow and blue.. any idea what it might be to? the engine im putting in has a slot for it on the engine wire harness but its blank(no contact).. maybe its for a 4 bbl carb because this one is only a 2 bbl and it has an extra sensor or something? What do you think?

ALL TAN WIRES ARE FOR THE WARNING (BUZZER) SYSTEM)
ON THE NEWER motors the tan with the blue stipe went to the aux oil tank low oil warning switch for the drive thats mounted on top of the motor by the carb.

if one bellows is cracked or ripped on the transom bracket CHANGE THEM ALL!

Looking at some parts diagrams for the 4.3 there is old model and new model what year did the old model end at? Also whats the difference between 4.3 L and LX. As far as the warning buzzer goes.. whats the best way that i can integrate it. Is the sensor that i need already on the engine or is there i plug i need to remove add the sensor and run the the connection? Sorry im asking so many questions i dont want to be a burden, please let me know if i am. You have been of great help. Thank you

Mercruiser started a bunch of big changes in the mid 80s
The oil alert system was a option at that time in the early 90s they made it standard equipment on most models
The sensor for the tan wire with blue stripe (if i remember correct) is in the little aux drive oil tank mounted on top of the motor near the carb.
be aware though there are a lot of these motors running around that had the wire harness with these wires in them that where never hooked up to any thing . the wires where there in case some one wanted to add this option some where in the mid to late 80s these wires where in all the standard wire harnesses
