All boats with hydraulic steering should carry a emergency kit that includes hyd fluid and a means to get it into the system a wrench to tighten fitting (usually a common crescent wrench will do) and some ram stops and zip ties to install them especially on twin installations .

seems as hyd. steering gets more popular i have seen lots of people stuck on the lake with no steering . mostly when fitting come loose and the fluid is lost . all fittings should have a drop of lock tite on the threads when assembled on these systems , its a great system and in no way unreliable when properly maintained and installed no fun spending the night on the lake because you cant steer your self in.

Frank: I really like the hydraulic assist on my older Slickcraft 28fter, but youre right--they can be a problem if you lose fluid. Two years ago I had a new autopilot installed (mfr to remain anon!!). The unit worked fine for a couple of weeks, then one day about 11 mi S of Manistee harbor, the autopilot simply wouldn't work. Switching to manual, that wouldn't work either, the wheel just spinning free. I had no autopilot, and no manual steering, with the rudders jammed hard to starboard. Fortunately I have twins, and with about a half-hours jockeying around in circles, I was able to work the rudders to nearly straight. I was then able to get back to Manistee using the throttles to steer. Turned out the elec hydraulic pump that was supplied with the autopilot was defective, and leaked all the hydraulic fluid. If I had a single engine, I would have ben in for an 11mi tow, plus the inspection from hell from the coasties.
