Ok here we go, I'm rested and have computer access.
We left Racine at 5 pm for the convoy over, 3 boats and one chase vehicle.
As we entered Illinois the air conditioner on Reid's truck quit working, except when we were stuck in traffic then it would cool.
Made it to the erie coast with lots of noise coming from the engine compartment.
Next day Reid found a shop to take it to, The wind was blowing like crazy and storms were passing overhead so we missed no fishing, truck was fixed next morning. meanwhile we all went from the motel to toledo beach marina for our EA get together and ate like hogs
Venison brats, and sundry other tasty victuals.
Josh and Charlie went out to Brest Bay to see if they could find fish they picked up three walleyes there.
The next day forecast called for light west winds (ideal) so we rose early to go get some!
We left the slip at 6 am Reid, Clark (trip organizer), My son Corey and I.
As we left the harbor we found the west breeze was actually straight out of the east with 2 ft waves with an occasional 3 fter that were trying to pass each other, they were like 3 ft apart. We ran directly into them for 5 miles and set up. We caught several sheephead (freshwater drum) and White bass but only 2 fish the right color but nice walleyes nonetheless.
We had reports of fish coming regularly at a spot farther east NW of west sister island, 12.77 miles from the launch in 27 fow! (thanks Salmon head) the western basin is flatter than many pool tables I have played pool on.
We commenced the eye whacking immediately upon arrival, Had several doubles and triples going until we had 22 eyes on board of our 24 fish limit, 6 per person per day in ohio waters.
Then we ended with 6 fish on at once, I marked the spot on my GPS for reference the next day.
This day was rather a struggle at the beginning as we had of all things left the nets in Clarks truck after we hgad put them there at the motel for safe keeping, it was fun landing walleyes with a gloved hand we did lose some however before Mike of the "Little Dandy" passed one to us from his boat. And I lost a rigger rod overboard while trying to do too many things at once. There were a few quiet moments after that one, but nothing was going to ruin my fun and it definately was fun.
I was retying a dipsy leader when the rigger next to me went off I reached over with my free hand to pull it from the holder but it only came out part way on my first attempt. I gave it another pull and slipped as I was falling out of my hand went my 7 ft one peice light uglystick with 320 gt2 reel
Oh well first time that ever happened to me.
Back to the peirheads we go to clean our catch and some more good fellowship.
At the cook tent there was more venison brats and Fresh deep fried walleye OMG was that tasty.
We had a great time talking and joking around with our internet friends from Ohio Michigan and Wisconsin. Isn't the internet a great thing?
If it wasn't for that I would never have known any of these great guys!
Even the ones from Wisconsin! So I'm very glad to have found this site!
Next morning found us on a dead flat lake skimming along to the mark from the previous day.
Upon our arrival after setting 3 lines of our 8 allowed we had our first walleye in the boat. by 9:30 we had our limit and headed in for the ride back home....
Smallish spoons were the ticket along with one of Reids Salmo hornet lures. Riggers dipsies and mini diver discs behind the planer boards all did well. 2 colors of leadcore with 3/4 oz snapweights worked too but not as well as the mini divers so we phazed them out of the spread in favor of the discs. The new mini divers from Walker were a nice addition with their trip mechanism.
Had a great time, enjoy the pics!
