Perch Jerkin'...

Took the day off yesterday and accepted an invite from my Dad and his good friend George to go perch jerkin'. Launched out of Turtle Creek and motored through the NE blow slop out to "A" can. Spent about 30 minutes there with one lone perch and a few white perch. Made the move East to "B" can and had action immediately.

We ended up keeping 41 perch for the trip, but those 41 weighed 13.75# prior to meeting the knife. Didn't keep any under 8" or so. We probably caught well over 200 fish, but most were under-sized.

It was pretty much non-stop action for me, and I was only using a single hook about 4" above the 1oz. bell sinker. I purchased some size 6 Gamakatsu "panfish" hooks at Cabelas the other night on a tip from a guy here at work...and they really worked great, especially the red ones.

Planning on getting out a few more times...

Nice catch Clark.

I was invited along on Roamer's boat for perching yesterday. We ended the day with 51, but not as big as the ones you harvested. I'll let Hal post up the report.

Your perch rig sounds interesting. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. I've fallen into the bangles and beads thing, and it's time to go simple again.

Now, if you can drag that B Can over closer to Toledo Beach . . .

Hal,

It's a really simple rig. Slide a hook on the mainline prior to attaching your swivel for the weight. About 5" up, double the mainline, wrap twice around your index and middle finger..creating a loop about 3" in length. Put the hook through the loop and cinch down tight onto the mainline. Pull TIGHT...if not, eventually the loop will get pulled out.

Since the fish were coming right off the bottom, another thing that worked great was to tie a 5" leader off the eyelet of the weight, and then attach the hook.

I'll never use a crappie rig or spreader again.

I AGREE CLARK...i have been fsihing with just a sinker and single hook the past couple years and have outperformed spreaders and crappie rigs...

just attach a 5/8 oz sinker and a snelled hook at the swivel snap and bamm, lets go catch some perch....very simple, but very effective

hoping to get out this sunday on the big lake for some perchies..

going saturday on the lower detroit river some some perch/gills, buddy is taking me to his honey hole where he has been getting some big boys!!!

I neglected to mention that Corey was the person that originally keyed me into the hook on the sinker program.

Thanks Bro!!!
