Need a little help

Hi all,
Here is my delema. The last two trips out my wire dipsey set up has been really hot. Problem is, I am unable to keep anything hooked. All the fish have come unbuttoned within 15 seconds of the initial rip. I am currently utilizing a DR release (Scotty pad) off the hook keeper on the rod holding the wire and keeping the drag set light. I am also using a Wolverine stealth snubber off the dipsey.
My question is, should I tighten up the drag more so the fish get a better hook up? Any other thoughts?
Thanks for your input,
Bill Brock

Bill,

Not sure about the DR release thing. I set my dipsey rods with the drag just tight enough so that it doesnt leak line when trolling. That seems to work just fine for me. Give that a try.

I run mine the same way as Puckstop. What type of baits are you running on them?

If I'm going fairly slow I can set them as the fellas described above however until I find a productive depth I will often let the line leak out slowly on turns and waves etc. If the waves are bad or I am trolling faster I often can't comfortably set the drag tight enough so I set it as tight as I want it during the fight. To keep the line from leaking out I use a half hitched rubber band around the wire and then looped over the reel handle.

Ripped hooks caused by sticky, grabby or overtightened drags are my guess for #1 cause of fish lost on wire. Make sure your drags are in good condition and have smooth start up.

Let the fish have his fun, even if he decides he wants to run you out a couple/three/four hundred feet doing it, then you can focus on getting it back.

Thanks guys.. I guess I just need a little more time with them. I initially had the drag set too tight which resulted in a couple of break offs hence going with above. I believe I went too far the other way.

Howard, I am running primarily spinnies and flies with them. (8 in spinnies, fishcatchers, etc..) By the way, were you the charter captain that responded to the overturned boat off Manistee Saturday morning? If it was you, my hat is off to you!! I never heard the distress call even though I was scanning. Thank you for being there for them!!

overturned boat ? what happen? I did not hear about that . fill me in with the details Bill. and I would say losen your drag a little as they said above. I run mine like that. remember when you went out with me last year and we missed the 5-6 fish on the divers. well i blamed that on you crankin the drags to tight on the diver reels I never missed a fish on a diver till that day. i like to run them so the drag will creep just a little every now and then.
try that.. it will help lets go fishing

Larry,
It's weird, man.. I don't have any problem with the fireline dipseys. Just the wire rods. I'm going to keep playing with the drags.

Apparently, A 16 ft Tracker took a wave over the transom of the boat. The captain flipped the bilge pump on and found out it didn't work. They then took another wave and the boat capsized spilling 5 crew members into the drink. 4 of them were wearing pfd's. The captain was using a portable radio trying to hail the Coast Guard but to no avail. Apparently he didn't know what channel he was on and was transmitting on channel 7. Only one boat (I believe it was Howard) heard the distress and relayed info to the Coasties. Everyone was plucked safely. I heard the discussion on the radio later in the morning and that is where I received my info on the ordeal.

If the waves/weather look good for tomorrow, do you want to go?? I'm game...
