What is a Mackinaw? I've only heard of it - not sure I know what one is.

T3600--many people tend to reserve the term "Mackinaw" to designate native lake trout, such as you might find in Lk Superior, as opposed to the planted fish that you find in Lk Huron & Lk Mich. There are several sub-species of lakers, and the native fish have a somewhat different apperance from the planted ones. I have caught native lakers in Lk Superior that have flesh that is almost bright orange, compared to the pasty-white flesh of the planted fish you catch below the bridge. The native fish from Lk Superior are also superior table fare. This may be a factor of their slow growth rate as much as their heritage.

Dave - thanks so much ... that's awesome to know. I'd love to turn this into a article if you don't mind or you can write it up yourself. Very informative.

My first year was '73, came up to Sturgeon Bay for snagging. It was legal. Had an old Daiwa spinner with 14lb line and a 3 ounce snagger. Cast from 6 AM until 3PM when I tail hooked my first. what a tussle a 28 pounder. Made two more cast and side hooked a 32 pounder. Slept over night in the pick up. too much celebrating. Then when out of sheboygan in a 14 footer. No rod holders. Held the rod in your hand. fished all night. You don't have to be crazy, but it helps. I also agree with Tiara, Love the feel of a big screamer down deep that knows your going to be tired before he comes up ! After 30 minutes you think he's tired and coming up the chute, then he leaves you like a blind date and you stand there with a broke line and heart !

Greg--go ahead if you want to do an article, but do some research on your own. I'm working strictly from memory here, and, like most other parts, it ain't what it used to be.

Hey Guys, here are some photos you might find interesting. They are of my dad and I in greenland around 1952. Dad was the naval liason officer at a US airbase at Narsarssuak Greenland, that is where the photos were taken. The base was on a Fijord sp? and every spring the Arctic Char ran up toward the Glacier that formed the river going into the Fijord to spawn. Dad was an avid fisherman and you can see he was in seventh heaven. Guess where I got the bug?
The Arctic Char would be a relative of some sort to the Mackinaw Trout that are taken in Lake Superior.
Mike Coe.
hope i did the photos right.
