As a rule of thumb, I run my flies from 19" to 24" behind the flasher (generally spindoctors). I measure that length from the top of the loop to the back of the second hook. Hope that helps.

Genreal rule I use is no greater then 3 times the length of the flasher - for 8" SpinDoctors that would be not greater than 24" - I usually run about 22" but situationally I will go shorter. For 10" Spin Doctors - no more that 30" - but usually 24 to 26" for me.

I know a lot of guys are extremely diligent about the same fly leader length - but for me I like to vary the length a bit. The shorter the leader the more the fly will follow the flashers action, the longer the leader the more dampened the action on the fly is related to the flasher. Leader material also plays a roll in how the fly relates to the flasher action.

It's not an exact science but try some different lengths, run in the boat next to while trolling and check out the difference in the action. Choose a bright sunny calm day for this where you can get the flasher and fly a few feet deep but still see it.

I agree with Greg...most of what you hear experienced captains divulge when discussing leader length references back to the mood of the fish that day. Having a little variety in the spread never hurts. I've seen days where the standard 18-22" works well, but then others where a leader that was tied up by myself (usually on the short side at 16" or so) was heads and tails better than the others in the spread.

I also feel that you must factor in the size of the attractor that you are using as well. Smaller usually means shorter leads, larger means longer leads.

At least that has been my experience with the guys with whom I have fished..

Red rider standard issue is 23.5 " end of loop to end of hook, but then I troll slower then most.

standard for me is 2.75x the flasher length and I measure from the top of the loop to the back of the hook. That is my starting point and move things around from there.

For me it is 23" behind 8" Spin doctor and 24" behind the 10" Spin Doctor. The 11" Coyotes I am normally around 30". Hope this helps.

For the 8 inch flashers I'm always inbetween 22-24 inches. The ten inch plastics get tied between 28-30. 50lb floro gets put on everything. If I need to vary the fly action I play with lead lengths. Generally I'm one of the fastest trollers out there, unless the water temp has taken a digger, then I may be the slowest guy out there that day
