A couple months back, the Lutheran School at which my kids attend Pre-School had a charity auction to benefit the school. I was happy to see a Lake Erie Walleye charter on the list with Capt. Bruce Sibberson. I had never met Bruce, but had heard of him through the grapevine around Woodville.

I won the auction for the trip, and set the date for June 16th. Invited my Dad, my BIL Craig, Conman, Fish-On (Dave), and my cousin Mike.

We left the dock at 5:30am on Saturday to find very calm seas. The one-hour motor out 16 miles was very comfortable aboard the 40' "Egg-Cited"...a 1977 40' Egg Harbor. Beautiful boat..and Bruce obviously has taken great lengths to get her restored to almost new condition.

We set up in 32fow directly in line between W. Sister and S. Bass. Bruce said we were about 2 miles from the Canadian line. We used mayfly rigs w/ 3/4oz egg sinkers on them. Single gold/hammered Colorado blade, red/gold beads, and a single red octopus hook, with about a 1" piece of nightcrawler. Bruce told us to cast out, count to ten, then start a slow retrieve, occasionally pumping the rod.

We made 4 drifts in 4 hours. Here are the results.

Drift 1: 10 walleyes
Drift 2: 12 walleyes
Drift 3: 17 walleyes
Drift 4: 8 walleyes (5 tossed back)

A slight SE breeze made for very comfortable fishing conditions. The drift was absolutely perfect. The best technique for hooking fish was to not "set the hook", but to rather point the rod towards the fish when you felt the tap, then apply steady pressure with the rod while quickly making 3-4 turns on the reel. If you tried to "Bill Dance" the fish...you pulled it right out of their mouth.

Fish were mostly from the 2003 class, but we did have a couple that pushed 5#. We had a great time, and it was an awesome way for me to spend Father's Day weekend with my Dad. 47 walleyes in 4 hours of drifting is some serious catching.

Anyone that would like information on Bruce and his charter operation, just PM me or call me. He also does perch and smallmouth trips as well. I think I'll make this an annual thing with my Dad...he had a great time out there.
