I'm new to GL fishing and want to make sure all of you are experiencing the same phenomenon that I am. Are Stinger spoons really only good for two fish? It seems that if they are not bent after the first fish, that the colors are coming off or peeling up. I've not experienced this with other spoons and I'm curious to know if all of you have experienced the same thing. Thanks, Brian

A coat of clear nail polish goes a long way to preserving the finish on spoons. Goes on easy, dries fast. One of my nieces turn me on to Sally Hansen Hard as Nails as it was the 'best' according to her.

Hard as nails is probably the best. Head cement will work but takes longer to dry. Still I feel that it is bull crap for a manufacturer to produce something that isn't ready to fish, I likew stinger spoons at least the scorpion size but don't like the paint. My worst peeve is bad hooks though.

Brian, I cannot second Gary's suggestion of Warrior spoons enough. I have two of them that have taken over 10 fish a piece(weasel and blue dolphin w/ gold holo) and don't have a scratch on them. No BS. Check them out at www.bigpapasportfishing.com or www.warriorlures.com You won't be disappointed. I'll even go so far to say that if you're not happy with the fit and finish on them, I'd buy them off of you.

I've had issues with Stingers as well. They catch a ton of fish...but you guys are correct....paint comes off...particularly on the copper-backed walleye versions.
Ah well, there is more than one way to skin a cat, and I've been extremely happy with the new WD spoons from Dreamweaver and also the 100 series Northports I've been running this season. Easily have seen 200 walleyes come to the net with those two brands alone on the boats on which I've fished.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'm going to try the nail polish (I have a feeling I may have some explaining to do when my wife finds it on my boat) and I've ordered a few warrior spoons to try out.

I had the problems with the finish on many of my Stinger Scorpions several years ago and so started using the clear nail polish when they were brand new. The ones with the polish are holding up fine, but I'm running mostly Silver Streaks now. I've had the same problem with a few of the Silver Streak finishes. I have a handful of the new Dreamweaver WDs that I've been using this year and the finish seems to be holding up just fine - we've taken a lot of fish with them too.
As for the Stingers being easily bent, well thats the price for the action you get from the lighter spoons. They can be bent back close to original and sometimes work better when slightly bent. I think everyone has seen when you can put down 4 or 6 'identical' baits and one outproduces the others by a wide margin. To minimize bending, try dumping fish right from the net into your cooler then grab the hook with a pair of needle nose and lift slightly while twisting the pliers so the weight of the fish pulls the hook out. You'll end up needing to replace hooks occassionally, but thats a good time to upgrade hooks anyway.

Thanks for the tip Littledandy. You bring up another question though. What brand for the hook upgrade? Treble or single aside, what brand do you upgrade with and do you upgrade with the exact same size hook?

Brian, My preferences are in this order.. Owner, Gamakatsu, and VMC 1/0 for regular sized salmon spoons and 2/0 for magnums

I stopped using Stinger spoons long before I ever bought my own spoon company. In my opinion you shouldn't have to doctor up a $4 spoon just to get the paint to stick. Stinger knows about this problem, but apparently their sales are good enough that they can ignore it. Not to say I never had paint problems on Raider spoons, but if a customer came to me with a paint or tape issue I always made it right for them. That's just good business.
We caught tons of walleyes on the small Silver Streaks at the Erie Outing. Silver with a black and pink nose was especially hot.
