i have a 1984 350 mercruiser in my 25'pursuit. it is having starting problems. i seem to have it pinned down to something in what i would think would be a neutral switch'if there is such a thing' i have put on new charged batteries and changed cable ends to the batteries and my depthfinder shows 14+volts. it seems as though if i push my throttle to the right to the neutral position and run it up and down as i turn the ignition it will find a sweet spot and start. i think it is something back by the shifter cable but i am not sure where. anybody's help would be greatly appreciated i hate missing great fishing as my boat sits at the dock. thanks for any response tom

Tom
sounds like the switch is loose or the bushingd on the shiftr are wearung out follow the yellow wires with the red stripe it will lead you rite to the net. sw
very unlikely the swich is wore out more like some thing is loose or the starter relay is going out. starter relay is back on the motor again the yellow wire with the red stip will tell what realay it is

well we got to the boat this morning and i followed the wires and tightened what i thought was a relay switch but it did nothing for me. luckely my buddy brought his smart alec 17 year old son who is use to old cars and tapped on the starter with a hammer and it started up. now i might have two problems? the starter of corse is under the engine, i guess i have to cut a hole in the bottom to change it. i guess that will be big $$$'s now.thanks again for your help frank. tom

well there is good news and bad news

now the good news is most marine mechanics have some special tools and a small friend to change the starter with out the hole in the bottom of boat or pulling the engine .if its real tight they probably will chage you a extra hour or so but not a great big issue
bad news is as you probably allready know you NEED a new starter

yes sir i'm thinking of $190-$200 for the starter and about $100labor. it isn't really that tight but a couple hoses will have to move to get to it. i thought about trying it myself i was told only two bolts need to come out but you maybe need to wire it up blind, under the motor out of sight so i think i will look for a local guy to take care of it for me. thanks again and i'm really glad they don't have to cut a hole in the bottom. tom
