I have an older used Raytheon 20xx that I am going to put for sail that is a 24 mile range one. Seems to work good but I am not real framiliar with it because I just removed it from a boat I bought. Greg may be able to tell you a little more info about it. I am looking for $500 for the complete radar including cover and manuels. Message me if you want pics or more.

I have a Furuno 1620 , and it is on a 26 foot boat. It does a great job and I can't beleive I waited so long to get one. It is one of those items that the more you use , the better you will get with it , use it even on nice days at first so you get used to what you are seeing on screen. It has a 16 mile range and that works good for me , all I am really concerned about is close in during low light and foggy conditions. On E.O., Greg and Tom have a Raymarine unit that has a much longer range and it does a nice job as well , no real comparison though as the Raymarine unit they have is a top quality radar and my Furuno is a much lower priced unit with less features but it does what I need it to do.

Furuno has won the awards for the best "small boat" radar. The 1623 is a good unit that Rick has. The 1715 is a much better unit because of the hor. Beeamwidth. Both units will work great but, for an extra $200 the 1715 has 5.2 vs 6.2degrees 1623 and the 1715 has a 7" monitor and the 1623 has the 6". The 1623 has 18nm range and the 1715 has a 24nm range. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call. 1-800-325-7181. Also, both units are in-stock.

Thanks.
Vince

radars on boats anywhere are such a neccesity, but most important is usability and understandbility...if you do not use one alot its important to spend time understanding the display.
my advice is for small boats a 16 to 24 mile 2kw , but more important is a daylight screen, crt's are difficult to read in sunlight, raymarine, furuno are probably most common.in the less expensive units, i have used both and different kinds, great in weather. also "read this" one thing most people purchasing a radar overlook is the fact that the magnatron will weaken with use, hrs on a radar are like hrs on an engine, that and the fact manufacturers constantly change and upgrade, i would reccommend a new radar unit.
