If any one has secrets out there on how to keep the costs down now is the time to share them When we work together we all do better in the long run. We will be much happier on tournament day if there is a full field of competitors and the only way we can do that is to try and think up ways to make our sport affordable for the greater numbers I think we all know how much we love fishing and it has saved our sanity in the escape from the real world but from choosing the rite tow vehicle to working around kickers how can we keep this sport affordable At the end of the day there really is a limit to what we can spend on any thing. That’s not as important in this case as the ways we keep it affordable educating each other to obtain a better more affordable experience outdoors Let’s start with points in a boat motor < If you have a io or inboard that still has points in it they have to be reset or replaced every 50 hours of operation or you will loose at least 15% of you fuel economy Better yet a electronic ignition upgrade would eliminate the need for points. Breaker points have not been used in cars since the early 70s when the epa started regulating pollution control and fuel economy I don’t understand why they are still used in some new marine engines. No I will have to take that back I know, “COST” is why they still do because it cost a little more to put the electronic ignition system in but it will save you money in fuel in the not so much longer term15% of 1.50 a gallon may not have been a big thing but 15% of 4.00 a gallon certainly will get more attention
We are faced with tough decisions every day. Let’s say your boat motor is wore out and in need of a rebuild well although more expensive in the short term to install a new EFI motor when careful consideration is given to the whole situation its is often less expensive Some times its just better to buy a whole new rig What ever the situation is lets talk about the ways .The decision processes that keep it affordable/doable for the numbers
hi frank,I have an inline resistor 1973 302 888 and I am thinking of doing away with the point style dist. or looking into some sort of hei conversion so I am thinking wether or not this can be done by myself any brands and or suggestions thanks Matt

Re:whats 4 bucks a gallon going to do to your fishing
There is a ignitor kit to convert yours to breaker less ignition, This involves a little work to the distributer itself a new coil and in some cases a new wire from the ignition switch back to the coil
Think this is the part needed for the distributer you will need the numbers off the tag on the distributer to confirm
i will out of necessity acccept donations from those who ride with me every week (but notthe once a year new guys).i usually try for three trips a week.in may-june this year, only 1 of those will be the 20 mile run each way for salmon.the other 2 will probaly be short hops for browns and steel.lake o has plnty of big browns on the east end and on 8lb. they provide a lot of fun.

Re:whats 4 bucks a gallon going to do to your fishing
am toying with the idea of mooching similar to what they do out west.drift with meat on clean meat heads off the riggers and maybe a wire line off the side.i could use my probe to check down speed.many times the current deep runs opposite of the wind which would give more action,i have done this for bass effectively with stickbaits. any thoughts?sorry for long post.

Keith, We can do the boat pooling now that I will be on the river also. Between you, Jeff and myself we could have a good time. That kicker is going to pay for itself sooner than I thought, come on spring. Rich

Re:whats 4 bucks a gallon going to do to your fish
It's not easy for me to comment on this situation, not owning a big water boat...but from the standpoint of someone who begs, borrows, mooches, and basically finds a way to fish on many different boats each season...I can fully accept the fact that what was once a $30-50.00 per day trip will now cost me more. I have ZERO problem with that...considering the alternative which would be to NOT fish...ugh..
In my little world, I try to put things into perspective. I see guys at Sport and Fishing shows spending hundreds of dollars on "new" things for fishing...things that they may just not need. Now, I'm not saying we should not support site sponsors and such, but a perfect example of this exact thing happened in front of me at Gander Mountain in Toledo the other day.
Two guys looking at walleye spoons. As Hunter and I stood there, I overheard them talking about "I heard this one was hot last year...and this one...and then this one too...(two of which I have run A LOT and not done well)". They each picked up about fifty dollars worth in spoons and headed to the counter, picking up 5 Mini-discs ("we have 10 on board, but we might need more) at $6.00 a pop, along with the expensive Lauverick releases ( 5 packs @ 4 per pack at $12.50 per). Hunter and I were in line behind them and the one guy says to the other...
"Man...gas sure is high right now, eh? Wonder what it'll be like in June??"
To which I simply replied..."I don't mean to barge into your conversation, but unless I misunderstood the two of you...it sounds like you already have plenty of that stuff on your boat...and $200.00 in gas is 50 gallons at a minimum...that's easily a couple trips worth you are holding..."
Guys looked at each other and thought for a minute...made their purchase (which still surprised me) and then said..."you know what...that makes sense..."
It's all perspective. We complain about gas prices but still pay $1.39 for a 20oz. bottle of water when there is a drinking fountain right down the hallway.
